Red Light Question Foster City

Some of you may know this intersection but there are many like it The one I am talking about is where highway 92 east exits onto Metro Center Blvd. The exit opens up into four lanes and Ts into a cross street. The left lane is a left turn only with a stop light. The next lane can go straight into an Orchard Supply parking lot or also turn left. This lane uses the same stop light as the left turn lane.

There are two lanes that turn right onto Metro Center Blvd. There is a seperate stop light here. This is a standard stop light, green for go and red for stop. Not a yield blinking light. These two lanes can only take you onto Metro Center Blvd, you can not make any other turns from these lanes. They are not a sharp right but a gentle yield as in a freeway onramp. It is pretty much just like a metering light when entering the freeway.

The A is the Orchard Supply and my car would be traveling left to right on highway 92.

My question is, does one have to wait for the red light to turn green before proceeding onto Metro Center Blvd?

If there is a red light there, yes you would have to wait if it is more like proceeding straight from those lames, it wouldn't fall into the situation where you can turn right on a red after stopping. Can't really tell by the map, so I can't really be much more help.

if in doubt, always stop, wait the car to stop moving, wait for 3 to 5 seconds, looking left and right.... then iinch forward, checkiing for safety of your fellow citizens, then proceed slowly and cautiously iinto the turn.....

I work nearby on Mariners Island Blvd and know this exit/intersection well. I always stop when its red and proceed to make the right when it is safe.

I see some people do that, most treat it like a yield sign. Has anyone honked at you for dropping? People honk at me often for stopping and some of my.coworkers start getting upset and ask why I always stop.

You can make a right on a red light after you stop, unless it is a red arrow, or a sign says no right on red.

Section 21453(A) allows right turns at a red signal after stopping. Section 22100 (a)(3) allows right turns from multiple lanes.

From the CVC

22100. Except as provided in Section 22100.5 or 22101, the driver
of any vehicle intending to turn upon a highway shall do so as
follows:
(a) Right Turns. Both the approach for a right-hand turn and a
right-hand turn shall be made as close as practicable to the
right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except:
(1) Upon a highway having three marked lanes for traffic moving in
one direction that terminates at an intersecting highway
accommodating traffic in both directions, the driver of a vehicle in
the middle lane may turn right into any lane lawfully available to
traffic moving in that direction upon the roadway being entered.
(2) If a right-hand turn is made from a one-way highway at an
intersection, a driver shall approach the turn as provided in this
subdivision and shall complete the turn in any lane lawfully
available to traffic moving in that direction upon the roadway being
entered.
(3) Upon a highway having an additional lane or lanes marked for a
right turn by appropriate signs or markings, the driver of a vehicle
may turn right from any lane designated and marked for that turning
movement.
(b) Left Turns. The approach for a left turn shall be made as
close as practicable to the left-hand edge of the extreme left-hand
lane or portion of the roadway lawfully available to traffic moving
in the direction of travel of the vehicle and, when turning at an
intersection, the left turn shall not be made before entering the
intersection. After entering the intersection, the left turn shall be
made so as to leave the intersection in a lane lawfully available to
traffic moving in that direction upon the roadway being entered,
except that upon a highway having three marked lanes for traffic
moving in one direction that terminates at an intersecting highway
accommodating traffic in both directions, the driver of a vehicle in
the middle lane may turn left into any lane lawfully available to
traffic moving in that direction upon the roadway being entered.

I'm not sure if this link will come through...its the google street view of that intersection. In playing with a few angles, I've seen the right turn lane signal indication Green Arrow, Yellow Arrow and Solid Red.

When the light is red, full stop, proceed when safe...

Personally I have never been honked at but I have heard and seen folks do that while I've been sitting at a different red at the intersection. If I recall there's a line so I stop behind it but I must admit I'll do my fair share of "cali stops" from time to time. It's a pretty short exit coming off the highway and people are exiting at speed so I am not surprised by the honks but that's their problem. You're trying to enter the intersection and traffic safely and there's nothing wrong with that.
