If you can afford to be a reserve officer, meaning you have the ability to do it on your days off and still go to work full or part time, then I say do that to get your foot in the door at an agency. Some departments actually pay their reserves (Palo Alto). South Bay Regional has a re-qualification academy coming up in March or April I believe. Check their website at theacademy.ca.gov.
FWIW, security clearances don't mean jack out here in the civvy world, unless you work for a defense contractor or some such thing. I had a TS/SCI when I was in, and it never even was mentioned during any backgrounds, basically like I never had it.
Good luck, don't give up. -
The coming up classes at South Bay are during the working day. I hope they will have a weekend one or evening one coming up in the summer.
In regard to the clearnace, I mostly mean I've got all my paperwork ready to go in regards to where I've been and references to validate what needs to be validated.
I already assume everyone does their own checking independent of other agencies. Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

It really depends on how bad you want to be a policeman. With a CA POST you can really go anywhere in the US.
It is really a great career but most people is not suited for it. I did 25 years but I advised my children and most people not to do it.
Good luck

Well bummber, South Bay got back to me, and they will not offer the night courses again for academy renewal. POST doesn't like that format.
I'm on orders for a year with the Army, and will have to do it when I accure enough leave time or I fall off of orders and am between jobs. That's assuming there are classes set up for around that time.
So it's looking I might simply have to take the modular night course and start an academy from scratch. But at least then I could simply stop at level II, and apply for reserve slots.
I just can't simply drop every thing again for jobs that are really hard to land. I did that once already, and I have to be a little more practical about it this time. Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

A lot of departments are hiring academy grads/laterals right now, and it sounds like your background is good so you could be hired rather quickly if you get your recertification done. South Bay no longer does the BAM classes due to funding or some such issue. I recommend doing the upcoming requal class in march and applying, very very good chance you will get picked up.Comment
