Sorry for this basic question but my son just became a LEO (we're very proud!) and he and I were discussing how he would purchase a non roster handgun, for hobby shooting at the range. Can he order a non roster gun on the internet, have it shipped to our local FFL, and show proof of LEO to the FFL and take possession of the firearm (after 10-day wait, he's in no hurry)? Is it that straight forward? Thanks in advance for your input.

Just my opinion, but it may be easier to find a local dealer who will order it for him, than to try to have it shipped in from out of state by some out of state dealer wholesaler who may not be familiar with the exemption to the "approved" list.Comment

I just bought a non-roster gun online. Found the cheapest one possible, no tax or shipping. He didn't care if it was Cali legal, he said that was the Cali FFL's problem. Had it in my hands within 3 days (took that long to ship), with the 10-day waiver letter from the boss. Policy Change Regarding State Exemptions for Authorized Peace Officers
Effective immediately, peace officers who have legislative authority to carry and use firearms may, without a letter signed by the head of their agency or the agency head's designee, purchase non-rostered handguns and/or large capacity magazines. The peace officer must present a valid peace officer identification card and the dealer must retain a copy of the identification card on file. (PC 12132 & 12133). A letter is still required from the head of the agency to exempt the peace officer from the ten day waiting period. (PC 12078).

Ammo Brothers has 2 locations in so cal and arguably the largest selection of handguns around. We are not in SD but it may be worth the drive.
