    Almost-

    The waiting period is exempted if two conditions (on letter) are met:

    1. purchaser is identified as a full-time paid LEO;
    2. employer has authorized the officer to carry firearms in performance of their duties.

    There is no requirement the letter state the firearm is for duty use, although employers may be reluctant to letterhead a non-duty firearm.

      True... thanks. I just stated what I saw on many sample letters. There is a format also in the Penal Code that you can cut and paste for the letter.

        Congrats.
        +1 on All State. I've spent many hard earned dollars there.

        You can buy as many handguns as your wallet will support.

        The best BUG revolver out there is the Ruger LCR.

        Slightly bigger, but much more formidable is the M&P 9C.

        I carried both of them as BUG's in patrol. The M&P is bigger and heavier, but very reassuring to have with you in the field.

          I LOVE my M&P 9c. Great gun. Mine is very accurate.

            20+ years ago when I graduated, I also bought my first pistol. I wanted the sexy PPK/S in the case, but a veteran officer suggested I buy just one gun, a snubby 5 shot revolver. As a backup, they are the utmost in reliable, and off duty you have five rounds which he said "should be enough to get you out of trouble, but not so much that you get overconfident and get yourself into trouble..." There are many who still refer to the snubby as "five for sure".

            I sold that .38 in a fit of stupidity years ago. As soon as I was able, I bought an exact copy of the same gun and I still have that S&W 640.

            They last near forever, and most agencies allow them for off-duty/backup. It's also a good idea for a new officer's first gun just to give you enough for your needs without going all "Tackleberry". For rounds, look at the Gold Dot 135 gr +P for short barrels.

              When I first graduated from the academy, I fully planned to go with the Miami Classic shoulder holster, full house .45, extra mags, cuffs, etc underneath my peach sport coat, wayfarers, and white sandals.

              It ended up being a 5-shot snub, a knife, and a speedy strip in my jeans pocket.

                I miss my old Model 60 Chief's Special. Like a fool, I sold it when I needed some extra cash many moons ago....

                  Too many stories of sold guns around here... I'll learn from the mistakes here and wont be selling my XDm. When you get your hands on a good piece, you just can't let it go.
