Something that always confused me...

This was a traffic stop that happened to me a few years back that me and my friend just laugh about now but it always confused me

I was at a stoplight waiting for it to turn green so I can make a left. Right when I make a left a cruiser comes out of nowhere and lights me up (I think it came from one of the smaller streets).
I pull over and the two LEOs ran to both sides of my car and had their guns drawn at me and my friend.
They ran my license and didn't find anything. They eneded up giving me a warning for a busted tail light.

What confused me is what prompted them to run to my car with guns drawn?

I had a similar situation many years ago coming back from my girlfriends house. Since it was a small-ish town, I was able to find out what happened from the PD afterwards. Turns out there was a 911 call for domestic violence. The guy left the house with a gun and was last seen driving North on x street in a blue Honda. I happened to be driving home on x street in a -- you guessed it -- blue Honda. Wrong place, wrong time. Once they realized I wasn't who they were looking for, they took off...no apology or nothing. I guess they REALLY wanted to get that guy.

I stopped a white van that matched the description of a suspect vehicle of an armed robbery, at gun point. Later, it was determined that it was a same make model of the same year van. It happens occasionally.

Back when I was in college at UCI in 1993 or 1994, I was living in an apartment in Irvine and my roommate had a beat-up white/gray Chevy van. One day, two LASD investigators came all the way down to Irvine check it out and interview us all. I don't remember the case, but I think it was a high profile case of a serial rapist(?) that drove a similar van. Anybody remember that case?

Yeah wrong place at the wrong time. Now running up on the car with their guns drawn, sounds a bit like bad tactics, or planing, but that's just me.

the joke that me and my friend always make whenever we look back on it is that it felt like they both teleported to my doors because right as i put my handbrake on they were already at both my doors with guns drawn

That is probably what occurred and I did something similar to a guy.

We had been briefed about a 211 that had occurred at a woman's clothing store on Colima Rd., in Rowland Heights. The suspect was driving a blue 260Z. He was a MW/early 20s, blond hair and wearing a blue baseball cap backwards.

I happened to be driving toward that particular strip mall and I saw a vehicle that matched that description. So did the driver, to a T.

He pulled into the the strip mall where the store was and I was thinking he returned to rob it again and just didn't see me. He parked right across from the store also.

By that time, I had numerous deputies from my station and a sister station with me. I had him proned out at gunpoint in the parking lot. After he was cuffed, it was determined he was not the suspect and was going to the cleaners a few stores away from the victim store.

I took the time to explain why I had done what I did and apologized for having to do it. He didn't care for the apology and walked into the cleaners very angry. It happens unfortunately.

i wish the officers cared enough to explain what was going on because i did not appreciate having guns drawn at me when i didn't do anything

I had the time to do so. I of course have no idea what the officers who stopped you were involved in, but perhaps they didn't have the time to do so because a crime may have occurred and the suspect was still outstanding.

In that case, since they may have determined you were not the one they were looking for, they needed to continue their search as rapidly as possible and wouldn't have had the time to apologize.

This is admittedly speculation on my part, since as stated, I have no idea what they were looking for. I am just offering up a possibility.

i dont think they would've had time to give me a warning for my busted taillight if they were in a rush...but it really doesnt matter
its all in the past. i was just curious and didn't think of "wrong place at the wrong time" for some reason

LEOs are like .mil pilots; they have to log a certian ammount of hours-per-month with their guns drawn or they lose their right to carry. During slower months, this sometimes requires they squeeze their hours in during routine traffic stops, Code 7's, high school DARE assemblies, etc...

Yeah... that was the case of the serial rapist who turned out to be a student at UC Irvine who drove around LA county with a beat up white/grey Chevy van, right?

Our local police proned out a suspected bank robber in a flowing gutter, after 5 min. wait it was determined that he was not the bank robber. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time, you are free to go.
