    Transporting firearms.....

I own a 4 door truck. I hunt often and shoot as often as I can at the range. My rifles are unloaded and stored in a soft gun case in the back seat of my truck, usually under the rear seat out of site. Handguns are stored in either a soft or hard case. I usually place them on top of the seat when driving so that if I were to be stopped by LEO, they are visible and not concealed. Ammo is placed in a separate hard case ammo box, but not locked. I usually keep the ammo also in the back seat of the truck.

My question is this......if my handguns are stored unloaded in a soft or hard case, but the cases are visible, is that considered to be "concealed"? Am I transporting my firearms and ammo legally?

I ask this question because a friend of a friend was stopped early this summer by a LEO while coming back from the range. He wasn't cited, but was told to put his ammo in the front seat or trunk, but not in the same general area where he is transporting his firearms (back seat). He's confused by this directive and his situation made me rethink how I transport firearms and ammo.

    Thank you.

HANDGUNS Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but handguns are to be in a locked container. There is no law about ammo transportation. So the LEO who stopped your friend is mistaken.

Concealable firearms unloaded in a locked container, which does not include glove or center console. No rules on ammo.

And, the Calguns Foundation wiki article on the topic: http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Transporting
ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!
