    FED AGENT Gun Policy

Are federal agents (CBPO's,BPA's, FPO) allowed to possess a fully automatic AR 15 in California? Or high capacity magazines?

I have a buddy that's a Fed and is issued a Colt AR with 3 round burst. High Capacity mags, the answer is yes. I don't know about a full auto though.

If the employing agency issues the NFA weapon to the agent as part of their loadout, then yes, perfectly allowable. I have known several agents from different federal agencies over the years who had NFA issued to them.

Magazines with a capacity > 10, not an issue to possess for them.

Yes, although I'm not in any of the above referenced.

If the rifle is not issued to them, is there a special permit or license they need to acquire before purchasing one with say a 3 RD burst?

As far as I know if they are purchasing it for themselves, there is no exemption to Ca law that allows them to have it. I think most of the fed agencies would be a bit touchy about personally owned either full auto or burst capable weapons being used on duty.

If its not issued to them it's unlikely they will be able to purchase one for personal use

All select fire arms purchased by FBI and other law enforcement agents in California are basically the property of the agency. Letterhead from the agency is required for the agent to purchase the weapon and upon leaving the agency, the agent must surrender the weapon to the agency. This info is from my FBI friend. He owns a BB AR for his personal use.

Depends on your agency; some agencies such as Border Patrol have pool guns that you check out at the beginning of your shift and turn it in at the end of shift, unless if you are on a specialized unit such as SRT. Usually if you are a 1811/criminal investigator in a large Fed Agency you are issued a long gun such as a M-4 if you want one. Whether you take it home it is up to your SAC's policy; however, the agency's policy dictates that you must store the long gun in safe and secure location to prevent theft or accidental discharge.

As far as owning your own personal long gun such as M-4, MP-5, AUG, short barreled shotgun, or even a AW, Uncle Sam says that if you need one they will issue it to you.

I have only seen department owned weapons no personal owned class 2 or 3 in Ca. Also short barreled shotguns. SOOO coool.

Our SRT, Firearms Instructors and others assigned to specialized groups are assigned Colt M4s. They are agency property and are 3-round burst. No full auto that I know of.

We are held to the same CA standard that locals are. That is needing a letterhead for a non bb AR.
