Gun confiscated by police 18 years ago

Back in 1994 I loaned a friend my ATM .22 Automag handgun as he wanted to take it to the range and try it out before purchasing it from me. The day after he borrowed it the police served a search warrant on the house where he was living with several roommates. Apparently one of them was selling marijuana but my friend was not involved however, the police found and took my pistol.

I was moving at the time and figured that it would be too much hassle for me to get it back. Now I'm wondering if there is a possibility that it would be in storage somewhere and I could retrieve it? I don't have the serial number but I did legally purchase it in California - would the DOJ have a record of it?

    Any ideas?

You can always ask. Chances are it was destroyed or sold at an auction.

I'd be willing to bet that it was destroyed long ago. Most agencies don't have the storage capacity to keep items that long. After a case has gone to trial there is no need to keep "evidence" with the exception of murder or cases of a serious nature where appeals are going to happen. If you were never contacted about it, by the police (which seems odd that they would not, as they have a duty to return property to the rightful owner) you can bet it was destroyed, rather than sold.

        Regarding serial number.
You can go online to the DOJ, download forms, supply notarized signatures, possibly prints, and get a complete list of everything you have ever registered.

Try looking in Mexico, chances are pretty good it's down there somewhere.
