I was hanging out over my SDSO deputy buddy house watching some videos from his dash cam. After I left I heard sirens in my head for an hour of the 2 hour hike back. Also I found myself driving like the video (luckily I didn't get stopped). This just because I'm not used to it? That would suck if it would be the norm.

Not surprising considering we didn't even get hand held radios or MDTs in the car until 1989. I visited SRC (yeah, the old name) one day and noticed some consoles under plastic in the radio room. I was told they would be put into service in 1989 and would be outdated by then.

Ron knows about the problems with the 480 radios we had.

The largest dept. of its kind in the country and I had to buy a Radio Shack scanner in order to keep abreast of the calls when putting the outside speaker on wasn't practical due to EMs or emergent situations occurring where quite was needed.

Quite a few LASD folks got their Amateur Radio licenses in the late 70s and 80s (or already had them) and carried 2meter hand-held radios 'just in case' I know of a few occasions where 2m was direct patched to SRC by telephone.

The coverage on the 480s was horrible. When MDTs were finally deployed they recycled most of the 480 infrastructure; frequencies, transmitters, receivers, etc. That's a huge part of why the MDTs were so unreliable at first...

Last department I worked for didn't have dash cams when I left in 2008. They probably still don't have dash cams...
