    Since I doubt that I will be able to be picky when the time comes (relocation to get a job), I will probably start out with Chinese and try to pick up some Spanish as I go along. Maybe in 20 years I'll be a polyglot.

      I assumed you spoke spanish from your OP. You need to start with spanish and then maybe pick up chinese along the way. In california, approx 65% of state inmates are spanish speakers. The rest are english speakers and maybe 5% are chinese or some other asian group. You need spanish first. Good luck.

        Ugh, I took Spanish in HS but never really kept it due to not being able to understand the slang. I guess I will try again.

            If anyone down there offers a basic course, take it. Like most other languages, once you get the basics down, it gets easier and easier to pick up. I wouldnt go for the written portion unless you have substantially more time.

            Then again this is coming from someone who was in Germany for 3 weeks and picked up 1 phrase I already forgot and about 3 words I think.
