They try to control traffic. I've been in a few and I was due to an accident and the rest only lasted about a mile.

As a chippy I will shut the freeway down for any fire, tow, caltrans or any other agency there to assist in whatever they are doing. No one is going to die on my beat if I can help it. And I will light up ANY motorist that tries to go around me which will put some one in danger. The faster they do their jobs without fear of being smoked by a motorist not paying attention the quicker we are all out of there with no injuries! Just my 2 cents of course.

Good grief, how many replies of the same answer are people going to post about this subject? I'd think that after the 12th "... It's called a traffic break....." the thread would have died already.

Gonna be flat honest. I've been on the West coast for 5 years, CA for 2. Never seen this. Spent 26 years in PA. Never seen this. I know I had no idea what it was.

Do they do this in all states or just in the west/SW?

A few years back on a cold December night's commute on I-80 a CHP officer did a traffic break for me. And I missed witnessing it. lol

My bike had conked out in the HOV lane. After calling 911 and being asked by the dispatcher if I'd accept any tow truck driver (Sigh. Yes, I said), I spent the next 90 minutes with my butt pressed against the K-rail and my bike in about 18 inches of shoulder as eastbound traffic passed by me. In the meantime two CHP cruisers drove by. The second one though stopped about 30 feet beyond me, backed up, and then parked next to me and my bike. Woohoo! Saved! There were two CHP officers in the cruiser, with one, I guess, supervising the other. Because he told the officer at the wheel to do a traffic break while he pushed my dead bike across six lanes of traffic. I was so excited that a CHP officer was wheeling my bike from the K-rail to the opposite and lit shoulder that I forgot to look to my right and watch the officer in the cruiser flash his lights and make traffic come to a stand still.

Anyway the night's event included a little tow truck drama and a free ride (in reverse) in the backseat of that very warm CHP cruiser.

Texas road signs are atrocious...probably the worst I've ever seen. For some reason its incredibly rare for there to be any signs indicating what the next few exits are along the road. Way too many people end up in a mad dash to go from the #1 lane to the exit ramp in 300 feet.
