Since I live 3 miles up a gated and non public dirt road, my wife met me at the gate tonight and we took one car to go to dinner. I left mine behind the gate and well off the public right of way (I am a land surveyor and understand that R/Ws do extend well past the edge of pavement). When we returned from town, about 90 minutes later, there was a yellow warning notice on my car. Obviously, the officer rn my plates because, it was noted that they were clear. How come he didn't notice that the registration came back to one f the few addresses on the same road? How come I got the notice if I wasn't even on a public roadway? Why would I only have 72 hours to move my vehicle off a private and gated road? It was not blocking emergency vehicle access. There was still the LA County required 20' of roadway to pass by me. I'm wondering if this is commonly done? Why the officer didn't put two and two together and realize that the car was parked on the same private road that is on the registration?

Some Federal Artillery officer...recognized your car most likely.
DMV address file down? Didn't wait to hear it? HUA?"If we make enough laws, we can all be criminals."

Damn Union employees!
BTW, I have a roll of cannon fuse sitting on top of a box of boxes of assorted ammo just sitting in plain site on the back seat. I would think that any thieving Yankee Artillery man would have appropriated it.Last edited by CSACANNONEER; 06-06-2012, 9:13 PM.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

A lot of times that tag is just put on there to let other officers know the car has been checked and there is no one there needing assistance. They usually don't tow unless someone calls back on it after the 72 hours is up.
If you are broken down on the freeway, they put one of those tags on it and tell you to remove it if you decide you need help. They won't stop if they see the tag.LASD Retired

If you were behind the gate more than likely someone else on the private road called and requested a check. What box was checked...or was it not filled out?May I always be the type of person my dog thinks I amComment

The car was there for less than 2 hours! There are less than a dozen homes up here and everyone knows everyone's daily drivers. I would have been called before CHP. I left the car at my office tonight and the tag is inside it. I'll let you know which box(es) were checked tomorrow.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I would be glad to see the CHP were in my area and checked out something they thought was out of place. As far as he (CHP) knew, the car belonged to a burgular.Comment

Burglars don't typically park 3 miles from the nearest home, do they? Again, the registration was run and the car is registered to an address on the same road it was parked on. I don't have a problem with CHP being there but, getting a 72 hour warning to remove it from the public highway when it was already parked behind a gate and well off any public right of way is a bit strange. Even stranger that the engine was still warm so, obviously it hadn't been there long. It is common for neighbors to park there for a few hours to a couple days at a time. But, this is the first time I've seen a yellow tag.
So far, the only thing that makes sense is a bored officer, with nothing to do, doing a welfare check 1/2 mile off the freeway. If that's the case, the officer went above and beyond by finding something to do instead of just doing nothing for a while.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

You are reading into this waaaaay to much. It's as about a big deal as chalk on your tire. Any time I see a car that is odd or not quite right, I stop and check on it. A car parked 3miles from the nearest neighbor is odd. I'd stop and check it out. Once determined its not stolen, no dead body in the back, or broken down old lady, tag goes in the window to let everyone else know its checked. It's totally a non issue.Urban legends are a poor basis for making public policy.Comment

MAYBE one of your neighbors called in a suspicious vehicle...

Actually, sounds like a very proactive officer checking out an unusual vehicle, (the whole "broken window theory"). They are on the ball in your neighborhood, that is good.
And to clarify, CHP shares jurisdiction with the Sheriff Department, so anything that is not an incorporated city is their responsibility, not just the freeways.Urban legends are a poor basis for making public policy.Comment
