    Chiefs interview?

I have a chiefs interveiw tomorrow, the department I have the interview with is in northern California and is a fairly small department. I have been through the regular oral board interview but I have no idea what to expect on the chiefs oral. Any information or experience would be greatly appreciated.

In 1987 when I had my Chief's interview, they told me it was a formality and that basically the chief wanted to meet the candidate and offer them the job.

Unfortunately, when I showed up for my interview and was getting ready to meet the Chief, I was disqualified for medical (knee cartilage) reasons even though I passed the physical. This was the last of 6 separate Wednesdays I had to take off from my regular job for the testing/interviews/etc. They spread it out over 6 weeks to be sure people were committed.
When I got back to work, my employer fired me for missing those days. Said my heart wasn't in my job.

Thanks for the info, I did some research online and I heard two things. One is its for the chief to meet you and see if you are a good fit for the department and the second was its more structured with advanced questions not asked on the oral board.

Often times these days it's for the chief to choose from the final handful of applicants; in a small department with one or two openings, you might have about 5 applicants who make it to the chief's interview, and the chief makes his final selection from there. Two biggest things you should be prepared to discuss and answer are details about the town and department, and why you want to work for that specific department over every other department in the state.

They want an applicant who wants to work there and will stick around... not someone who's throwing out apps and will jump into the first uniform offered to him with plans to move onward and upward down the road.

Do your research into the department. What are their goals for 2012? How can you contribute to the department and community?

Do you know about the city? Each community has specific issues. How can you help the city?

Is there a mission statement of the agency? How do you understand and embrace the values of the agency?

          Good luck to you.

After the Chief formally offers you the job, you may be given the "Chiefs Challenge." The Chiefs Challenge here was to call your PT instructor "a punk" at some point during the academy. If you did, you could pick what shift you worked on for the first 2 rotations once you were off of FTO.
