    Carry Gun RSD Question?

My situation is that my current job required me to purchase and carry a Sig P229 DAO. The pistol was accidentally ordered as a DA/SA and my company had Sig replace the trigger mechanism with the DAK trigger. Now, my pistol is a DAO model; for the academy and duty I would like a DA/SA. Would the dept authorize me to have Sig re-install the factory SA trigger and still use and carry the weapon?

    Thanks!

Why would you need the department to authorize it?

They either allow DA/SA or they don't. Both the DA/SA and the DAK pistols are built on the same frame and the parts can be installed easily are the field level...any armorer can do it; as can most serious hobbyist .

Personally I think it is easier to train with a DAK, because of it's consistent trigger pull...plus you have the backup of the shorter reset point. You're not giving up any accuracy or speed between shots to the DA/SA

I jsut want to be sure that having the trigger altered even though it is a factory option wouldn't be an issue. I agree with the fact that the DAK is a great training tool, it has really helped me become a better shooter and my trigger pull is excellent. I just feel that if I am going to use the weapon as my duty weapon I rather have a single action pistol. I have fired both models and I still feel the DA/SA is a better set up, both are excellent though. If I could have I would have kept mine DA/SA, but my employer only allows DAK for our duty weapons. I think that it's personnal preference between the two. Thank you for the information.

RSD will authorize any modifications as long as they are factory authorized modifications done by a factory authorized armorer, also that it does not drop single action trigger weight below 3.5 lbs

Hey Sgt Tom, do you know what type of handgun we will be using for Riverside County Sheriff's Academy? I am guessing either Glock or M&P?

Yeah guess again, they issue a revolver believe it or not. I highly suggest buying your own. I will be using my Sig P229.

I don't think we can use our own gun at the academy. Maybe I am wrong.

You are wrong. You use your own gun... unless you want the dept issued six shooter

RSO you must purchase your own duty weapon caliber may be 9, 40 , 45 for semi and 38 or 357 for revolver. Can be from the following manufacturers and must be DAO or DA/SA with a barrel length of 3.5" + for primary carry.

                    -Colt
                    -Springfield
                    -Glock
                    -S&W
                    -Sig
                    -Beretta
                    -H&K

Lights are allowed from Streamlight or Surefire typical holster with RSO is the Safariland 6280.

Thank you for all your help. Do I need to buy my gun before the academy?
Thank you again. Most likely I will either buy M&P or Sig P226.

I would say you would be best off buying it before, so you won't have to worry about it during and can take it to the range and put a few rounds through it before we start. Pistols are personal preferrence, I personally love my Sig P229. Not a huge Glock fan but they are great. I have liked the Springfield XD's I have shot, and 1911's. My dad has an issued H&K USP .40 from his dept and I like that but they are pricey. I personnally like .40 to begin with because it is becoming a very common round in Law Enforcement, also better than a 9mm but better mag cap than a .45, and more economical to shoot.

Also Bo, if you wait until you get the call and you are officially hired you can get the Sig, or Glock LE/Mil discount. Glock will give you a screaming deal on a pistol plus three high-cap mags.

So I am guessing we will be using regular 10 round magazine until we graduate from the academy. I am thinking about either buying M&P or Sig p226. However, Sig P226 cost $$$$$ compare to M&P.

Thanks for the information, I didn't know that much detail about it. Holster and light info is good stuff too.

Also, I already use a Blackhawk Serpa that my company issued. I really like it and would like to use it still. Would that be okay?
