I've been reading some of the threads regarding LEOSA but haven't seen any that address the LEOSA Reform Act of 2024. This passed the house and was sent to the Senate where it died. It addresses some of the issues raised in other threads I read. A summary of the bill reads:
"This bill broadens the authority for certain law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms across state lines.
Specifically, the bill allows qualified active and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms and ammunition (including magazines) in school zones; in national parks; on state, local, or private property that is open to the public; and in certain federal facilities that are open to the public.
Further, the bill permits states to reduce the frequency with which retired law enforcement officers must meet certain qualification standards."
The full text of the bill can be read here: https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-...-bill/354/text A better description of what the law allows can be found here: https://fop.net/wp-content/uploads/2...r354-s1462.pdf and https://www.police1.com/leosa/leosa-...jor-amendments
It seems like law enforcement organizations such as PORAC in California and others nationwide placed very little effort into getting this law passed despite it's significant effect on current and retired law enforcement officers nationwide. I don't know whether or not this law will be re-introduced in the new Congress but I'm trying to find out. If it is then it would be in the best interest of all active and retired law enforcement officers to put pressure on their local congress person and senator as well as any law enforcement organization they are a member of. to lobby in favor of the bill.
