    Anyone work for CDCR

The fed system is doing some messed up stuff to staff across the country right now and has me thinking about starting over and joining state. If you are a state CO, how do you like it?

FWIW-I have several friends who are COs in CA. They hate it. They mainly cite Sacramento's push for the "Norway" model and policies/procedures that are putting them in increased danger. Check out "That Prison Guard" on YouTube. He talks about most of it.

    BTW-Great review of the Bodyguard 2.0. 👍

What is the messed up stuff at the Federal level?
Is it temporary or is there a "five year plan" to implement change and progress towards a new level of professionalism and a new direction?
        A few more questions for you;
        How old are you?
        Are you patient?
        Do you anger easily?
        How's your sense of humor?

they are closing one and deactivating five. they are doing everything they can to avoid going through a official RIF procedures that give staff rights, protections and easier mobility throughout the federal system. instead they are trying to shuffle staff around to fill vacancies in undesirable locations and avoid having to retain staffs current pay.

Is it temporary......professionalism and a new direction
everything with the bureau is "temporary" or "possible" until they decide to make it permanent. the director already did that, we are not supposed to call them inmates anymore.......

          Are you patient?
yes, until I'm not. inmates are gonna inmate and sometimes they gotta find out..... one time an inmate was out of pocket so I took all the extra blankets and pillows from their cell because no paperwork is required on institutional property. to make sure the point was made I hit both neighbor as well.

          Do you anger easily?
no, its all part of the game.

          How's your sense of humor?
great, but its caused me a bit of trouble at family gettogethers. some people just don't see what's funny about deploying OC on an inmate trying to hang themselves with a sheet for attention.

Closures can be a pain in the ***. The state has been known to do something similar; "OK people, there's Closures coming, we have spots here and there, who wants to go early?" It causes confusion, who's seniority matters, and what spots are really open. The grass isn't always greener and CDCR is looking to close a couple more too so.... You might be better off, keeping your seniority, and riding it out.

Do you really want to go through academy again? Retirement age now is 57 too. On the plus side though there are a lot of opportunities if you want to promote; good Sgts and Lts are always needed, investigator positions, and field parole agent. You just gotta put in some time and if they down size or put on a hiring freeze it can be a while.

Inmates are the easiest part. It's following the policies, keeping the supervisor off your back, and picking up the slack for some of your coworkers that will try your patience.

They get over it. Keep yourself safe first!

I can't call it. It doesn't sound like the grass is too much greener, but it is a huge department with a lot of opportunities. Starting over with no seniority and going through academy.... ewwww!!! Or ride it out and see where you land?
Definitely some stuff to think about.

if I do go state, losing my time and starting off at the bottom will defiantly suck. if I stay in we are getting out of CA, thinking of going to Oklahoma or Texas right now, if I stay with the feds I gotta get out of the western region ASAP. going to start putting in my applications in January, might throw one in at CDCR, if things get worse for the feds by then

I was told by a lot of people; Apply everywhere, you never know where you might get picked up. Special Agent and Investigator positions are up and down the state in all kinds of departments and agencies. When those options open up it makes for an interesting career

I'm assuming you work for the BOP? If you're willing to stay in the correctional field, CDCR is definitely much better in terms of pay, retirement, and opportunities. The academy is held in Galt, CA, just north of Sacramento and honestly it's one of the easiest LE academies I've gone through. I believe it was only 12 weeks when I went (2017.)

The hiring process can be extremely long and drawn out though, my process took a year and a half (applied in 2015, I was coming from county jailer position before that) and I hear that time is about the average, a year to two years to get hired.

Also be weary that the state mandates a lot of changes as well, whether you like it or not. The governor has already closed down 2 prisons, and 3 more are due next. The state has obviously decided that punitive actions do not work, so they're releasing a bunch of them on good time.

I mean, since you're already a federal LEO with 'covered time,' have you thought about applying with CBP? ICE? HSI? USMS? DEA? Any of these agencies? Obviously you know, only apply to covered positions, not the VA/DOD/FPS le gigs.

Also, I’d suggest you submit your CDCR application as soon as you can. As I mentioned, the hiring process is a long one anyway, so you’ll have time to apply to other places in the meantime before they call you.

Do yourself a favor and do not apply to be a CDCr CO. Management is ridiculous at this point, playing games with “new models” which disregard staff safety. I just retired after 25 years in the parole division, and it’s the same there as well. CHP has the best gig at this point, and they get a guaranteed pay raise every year by statute after the salary survey is completed. I was getting 3 days of furlough and my CHP neighbor got a 7% pay raise. That was during a budget crisis year. CHP in a major city to start, then transfer anywhere in the state. Current retirement formulas are 2.5% at 57. You cal still retire at age 50, but service credit is 2% at age 50 gradually increasing to 2.5% at age 57. The other culture at CDCr is the employee blame during incidents…

I would think the very worse thing about CDC is it’s in California and the very best thing about BOP is you can get out of California.

But I agree with the poster that said look to lateral to ICE/BP or another FED agency, since you already have your foot in the Fed LE door.

If I was going to anything that resembles the Law Enforcement world I get into corporate security. My son retired after 15 years of the BS and is now working corporate security and making twice the $$$.

                            Update.

My transfer is moving along, but I'm not sure if I want to stay in the feds now. The agency has been completely screwed up. We have been directed to hold ICE detainees for deportation, but have been given no extra funding to support the increased population. There is going to be a budget battle so we are probably gonna go through another shutdown because it's the only thing Democrats can do to slow Trump at this point. staffing levels are still low, morale is non-existent and after seeing the Valentine's day massacre everyone who can retire is leaving and probationary hires are actively looking for other jobs because there is now near zero job security for new hires in the federal government. National and regional executives are leaving by the handful so we are leaderless with no clear vision for the future.

I Think I am going to start the process for CDCR. Grass isn't always greener, but at this point I don't think the federal prison system has any grass left.
