Do any of you old school LEO's have any stories and/or pics that you can share from the festivities in L.A. 20 years ago?

Wasn't a LEO back then (was still in college) but yeah, got some stories.

A couple of friends of mine were in the National Guard at the time and were deployed for the L.A. Riots.

They came back wearing the "L.A. Triathlon: Shoot, Loot & Scoot" t-shirts.

Better than the other shirts I saw afterwards, "Come to LA where we treat you like a King".

92 was not like the world is now, where everyone has a phone with a camera.

Well, the first night out, I was shot at three times in the first hour. I stopped counting after that, and the night only got worse.

I was 13, my dad was a Sergeant for Chula Vista Police Dept (in San Diego County) and member of SWAT. I remember being super scared seeing him leave with all his gear to go up to L.A. for support.. Like Ron-Solo, he was shot at during that time far more than 30+ years as an Officer...
Good Lord brought him home safe, though!

I'm not a LEO but a Sgt, my dad, and my dad's old employees told me that my dad and the employees were on roof of his liquor store while a clerk sold people food and water. He said the entire inventory of food and water sold out within a day.

I remember my dad leaving the house at 2 or 3 in the morning with his AK and a huge duffel bag full of God knows what.

The Sgt. told me about one of my dad's ex employees who also happened to be a distant uncle. He was on the roof with a shotgun and any time somebody who looked like a rioter or looter would step onto the property, he would fire a warning shot near them. Well there was a police officer who was african american who was running down the street and used our parking lot to cut across the corner. Dad's uncle fired a warning shot at him. The Sgt. went up to him and basically said "WTF are you doing?!" and my dad's old uncle said "my friend, if my own brother was running here like that I would have shot at him too" in the most broken English ever.

I didn't go ,but some friends went and they had a great time. I saw some photos that were funny, but there was one that stood out.

The photo showed a line of people from the front doors and down the sidewalk. The building wasn't touched. The buildings next to it was burned. I asked my friend what saved this building and why people were lined up. It was the Post Office and it was Mother's Day. People were lined up to get their checks.

A dear friend who was in the middle of it, told a hilarious story that ended with:

"...and right about then they realized that they had a basic terminology problem. Evidently the phrase 'cover me' means something completely different to Marines, than it does to Cops."

My buddy was deployed there with his ANG SP unit. He said the first few days walking around with a M-16 with no mags in the mag well didn't feel so good.
