Any Game Wardens?

From the wardens I've spoke with, it's a privilege to become a F&G officer, since there are so few hired, and all (most) started their career as normal LE and made the move to F&G based on their passion for outdoor work and their knowledge of hunting and other things outdoors.

I'm not trying to discourage you, I'm only saying it's a coveted position that many with experience want to fill.

Because there are so few is a reflection on the budget, and nothing to do with the desire of men/women who want to fill the role.

My point is, you're going to have to get in line behind those who have LE experience. Sad but true.

But, from being in contact with some DFG Brass is their is a higher turnover rate than most departments because of the pay or lack thereof.

Some of the greatest moments in life are achieved through hard work, determination and a little bit of luck. Don't worry, you are definitly not discouraging. And in the words of Han Solo: "Never tell me the odds!"

In all honesty you are making me more driven to succeed. Something i have picked up is when you are facing something tough, think of all the people who said you could not make it and prove them wrong.

There is at least one F&G Warden on the board. He's contacted me offline about my F&G application.

I'm in the process for F&G Cadet. They test only once per year, and should start taking applications again towards the end of summer, assuming they follow their previous pattern. They have one academy per year, at Butte as mentioned, which starts in Jan and ends in Aug. So you're applying in 2012, and testing end of 2012/ start of 2013, for an academy that starts in Jan 2014.

From what I've read they've had an upsurge in applicants the past few years, mostly due to the Wild Justice publicity. It wasn't that long ago that F&G didn't get enough qualified applicants to fill open positions. They do seem to have a high turnover even now. If you search Amazon you'll find two former Wardens who have written several books... both started with CDF&G and moved to the Fed's DF&W, which I understand is relatively common. I've read from one source that the situation would be worse than it is, they used to have about 300 sworn billets but only were able to fill around 200ish, but the unfilled billets were cut several years ago to reduce budget obligations.

When I tested I was told that over 600 were scheduled to test. My results letter indicated that there were less than 20 who scored high enough to move on initially: Groups 3, 2 and 1. They make take some of Group 4 depending on expected openings, which has has a minimum score of 95% and over 200 people in it... but the minimum score in group 3 is 100%, unless somebody scored a natural perfect score on the test everybody has vet pref points of some kind. The scoring breakdown is actually fascinating.

Now I'm tracking down everything they want for the BI packet.

Their minimum education requirements are some of the highest in the state, and their academy is one of the longest... over 7 months... while their pay is about 65%-70% of CHP. For me the pay doesn't matter as much, I've got a military retirement coming in already.

On the plus side most go 10-8 from home, get take home vehicles, set their own schedule and get experience handling investigations as well as patrol work... oh, and get issued SAI M1As. The Glock 22/27 combo is a bit of a downer, but they are adequate weapons.
