Before I became a full time deputy, I took my level 3 course at College of San Mateo and recertified at the time in Los Madonos College. Since then CoCo Sheriff's now operate their own academy.

Could you explain a little on the subject?
What does the class like? How long is each class?

      Thank you

Level III classes are generally 4 hours two nights a week and all day on Saturdays for about three months.

From my experience, it's like a college course. 3-4 nights a week for a semester. You are tested on the learning domains of POST and a bit of PT is included.

Consider what you want to do and plan accordingly. Level II is the minimum to go on patrol--and even then you have to be with a Level I or full-time LEO. Level III is prisoner transport and directing traffic only. Level I is equivalent to a full basic academy but only Santa Rosa and Evergreen offer it. You can take Level III/II at San Mateo.

Interesting, I think I will write to POST site and above academy for further information.
wonder if they have 3 weeks intense class like EMT does.

Tallship is correct, 1 weekday evening class for 3 hours and 1 all day weekend class for three months. It's been so long, I'm not sure what they teach in the level 3 class anymore since POST changes requirements. The last I took the recert class was in 1998.

Unless a department hires you as a reserve, don't waste your time or money self sponsoring (i.e. pay for yourself). An academy certificate is NOT a POST Certificate.

I don't know of any agency that sponsors reserves through the academy. Doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, though... Please name some if you know of any.

What you are looking for is the Basic Academy in Modular Format. Looks like CoCo County offers it.

Just check your local community college websites to see if they offer any of the modules.

Both LAPD and LASD pay for their reserve recruits training when they "hire" you.

Don't consider. Do research ride a longs and make a decision. If you are unsure if this is what you really want it will be a big waste of time on your part and any agency's part

Check with Co.Co. Sheriffs dept first. They used to only allow jail duty your first year, but this was years ago... Call first...
