any thoughts on hinged handcuffs VS chain?

when would hinged be called for, and wouldn't they be easier to slap on because the other cuff isn't just flopping around?

Yeah, I know you are supposed to grasp both cuffs in a certain way when slapping them on, but I'm sure that goes wrong during struggles.

I always carried at least one pair of hinged cuffs. The will fit on larger wrist (about 3 extra clicks) and when you get one half on, it can be used to leverage the wrist

how do you cuff an extra large person's wrists?

is that 'snap tie' only job?

I've known some Somonians who have wrists bigger than my ankles and I'm not a small guy.

I use what is given to me, I have no preference. But the whole hinged is better for large wrists is a plus.

Having used both extensively, I see no advantage to one over the other. Usually on bigger guys getting the wrists close enough is more challenging than getting the handcuff secured on their wrist.

I have found that hinged cuffs are much harder to apply on someone that is resisting.

Hinged is not easier to put on. The suspect's wrists is not always going to be perfectly lined up for you to slap on that cuff at the angles that the hinged cuff presents itself. As a matter of fact, most of the time, getting hinged cuffs on a suspect is going to be pretty tough in the field unless he is perfectly compliant.

The hinged does provide for better security after you get it on.

I carry 1 pair of hinged on duty along with several chains. The hinged gets used on heavy duty suspects who like to fight or resist.

However, unless I got a few guys holding the person down, I go with the chain first to get cuffs on, then I put the hinged pair on afterwards, then take off the chain pair.

Given the most common ways to defeat handcuffs, and having seen both systems defeated, I don't think hinged cuffs are anymore secure than chain cuffs.
