    Even Off Duty...

one has to be super careful. I hope they catch this guy soon.

Fullerton police Wednesday afternoon were looking for a man suspected of stealing an off-duty police officer's handgun and then using the officer's credit card at a Target store.

The suspect broke into a locker at a gym in Santa Ana and fled with the officer's Glock 9mm handgun and wallet, the Fullerton Police Department said.

Two place you will never see me leave a firearm.... In a gym locker or in a vehicle. Why? Because neither are secure places to leave your firearm..... EVER.

This. ^^ Did the latter once at Irvine Meadows with tickets won for concert. Didn't no about restriction even for active le and was told put it in car or leave. I put it beneath my seat, but worried about it the whole show. Never did that again.

So... what would you do with it when going to the gym?

The gym is just about the only place I don't carry because there is no place for me to secure it. I try to work out at work when possible because I feel absolutely naked going to the gym and leaving my gun at home. Bu that's just me.

I recently got a locking box similar to a Gunvault Nano for the car. I hide the box in a compartment in the cargo area of my SUV, looped the cable around some metal cross piece, and leave it there to lock up my gun, wallet, or whatever will fit when I need to leave things in the car. It's not Fort Knox but the car burglar will have to find the box in the cargo area then try to bust it open on the spot. It's just a little more security than hiding your gun under the driver's seat.

We have had two LEOs up here have handguns stolen from their personal vehicles. And one was a chief. So your reasoning is very sound.

The only time I have been in public with out a firearm was at a casino because they wouldnt let me past the metal detector with it. Luckily they offered to let me store it in a lock box in the security office.

Even if you dont have your gun you are still resposible for every round fired through that gun. Gotta be super careful about leaving your gun anywhere.

I hate leaving weapons in the vehicle and never at a gym locker. There's been a rash of gym locker break-ins in the SoCal area lately. I think we see at least 1 bulletin out for it every week now from various agencies.

Thankfully I have a home gym setup so I can carry anything I want while working out, including a shotgun and my M4gery.

I thought about investing in a gunvault for the car. At least it's an extra layer of protection for the smash and grab, and if they are going to steal the whole car... oh well... nothing you can do about that if they are that dedicated.

I can understand not wanting to get your gun stolen, but the law or perhaps the culture must be very different in CA.

Here if somebody steals a gun from me I'm not responsible for what they do with it... any more than if they stole a knife out of the kitchen and stabbed someone.

You dont think that someone should be held resposible at all if their gun is stolen and used to commit crime?

If your gun is stolen, you should not be responsible for the subsequent criminal acts of others but you are responsible for the negligence, if any, of getting it stolen in the first place.

I put it in the bag I carry with me from station to station...the one with my towel and water bottle in it. It is just a habit from not changing at the gym

Guns have been getting stolen from cars at gyms for years. The lockers at gyms are not secure. I took hundreds of theft reports from gym lockers and parking lots over the years. Thieves watch the parking lots and know they have a certain amount of time to do their crime.
