I had a question for the LEO's out there. I have an appointment next month for my CCW and the application packet requires you list all prior convictions and arrest. I had several conviction 20+ years ago in my late teens early 20's for traffic offenses and failures to pay and appear. How detailed does this need to be? I don't have the exact date or the penal codes I violated. Can I just list the approxmiate dates and explain this to the detective to show I'm not trying to hide anything?

CCW interview question

Just list the type of violation (speeding, stop sign, etc) and an approximate year. As long as it is traffic related only, and not criminal in nature, you should be good to go.

If you really, really had a want to do this, you can always go to the DMV and ask for your driving history printout. I think they only go as far as 10 years max though for the K5 or whatever it's called... I get them mixed up all the time... but at least it will also show effort on your part if you brought that too.I like guns

As others have said, just listing your violations and the approximate dates should be good enough, and a DMV printout can be a help pulling it together.
FTA and FTP can be another story, as those turn into warrants and criminal violations. You would probably want to ensure that all of those have been cleared and are no longer active on your DL before you sit down for an interview, and be prepared to explain them.

CGF generally takes the position that the question regarding traffic/moving violations and traffic accidents is deceptive and offers the following response:
*"The above is true and correct to the best of my knowledge; however, I do not retain records of this information
and I cannot be compelled to acquire a ten-year DMV driving history report at additional cost in order to complete this
application (see Cal. Penal Code Sec. 12054(d))."
(NOTE: IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION ON ANY VIOLATION/ACCIDENT, COMPLETE THIS SECTION OF THE
APPLICATION TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.)
There's a follow-up question on some applications that asks:
Again, CGF takes the position that the question is deceptive and offers the following response:Have you witheld any fact that might affect the decision to approve this license?
Of course, this isn't legal advice - and even if it were - CGF (neither the BoD nor affiliated attorneys) are your lawyers.
Depending upon your County and its Sheriff, these answers might by considered confrontational and get you denied. You will have to make the decision on how much of your personal liberty you're willing to lay claim to.
Best of luck to ya.

The CGF position about the question is completely defendable but I think that responding to such a question with legalese in a venue where the granting of the permit is discretionary, might well result in a permit denial.CGF generally takes the position that the question regarding traffic/moving violations and traffic accidents is deceptive and offers the following response:
