    noob question

I have been invited to take the Correctional Deputy I written test for Riverside Sheriff.
Is Correctional Deputy I considered sworn officer?
I tried to Google it, but I could not find any solid answer.

    Thank You

I'm fairly certain they're POST certified so wouldn't it at that point just depend on the department?

BTW, how is the process with LASD going?

The Riverside Correctional Deputy position is not a sworn position, but it is part of the CalPers "Safety" retirement, which is a plus. Many use it as a stepping stone to a Deputy Sheriff position.

I believe they are also granted CCW, but not sure on that.

My brother just took that written test them. I believe its not sworn in position. As far as I know Riverside county is not hiring deputy's. They are suppose to have major layoffs an let go a couple deputy's.

It is not a sworn position.

They are not automatically issued a CWW but, have the option.

I'm pretty sure RSO avoided laying Deputies off. I know they handed out pink slips and Deputies took a pay cut but, I don't think anyone actually got cut loose. Magically enough money was "found" to keep Deputies at work.

They're hiring Correctional Deputies because of AB109.

According to some friends who are RSO Deputies, they dodged the bullet on layoffs, but they took a hit on pay. Like many agencies, they are going to have to start hiring soon just to fill vacancies from retirements and other attrition.

Correctional Deputy I is a start, with decent pay and benefits. LASD's version, Custody Assistant, does not have the benefit of a "Safety" retirement, which is a significant difference. And, LASD will NOT issue their Custody Assistants a CCW.

Until you get a positive job offer from somewhere, take every test you can take. I was on 8 or 9 waiting lists before I got hired.

Hiring process took 14 months for me and that was with no issues or hang ups. Stay in there and stay focused.

Wow didn't know they issued ccw. Magical money LOL maybe they can magically find my app from last year an I can get in on this money.
Well at least no deputies where layed off. Works in our benefit for those looking for LE jobs, less POST certs to go lateral somewhere else.

Does anyone know if I can use my RSD deputy trainee app an test scores for this position

Check to see what PC they make their arrests under. I'm guessing 831.5 which is basically Public Safety Officer employed by the sheriff. Which is not Sworn.

They are a non-sworn position you will have a N (nora number) in from of your ID number if you are picked up which all non-sworn classified employees with RSO get (OA's, CSO's etc...) We took a huge paycut which was pitched as 10% but it only equalled out to 10% if you were a top step investigator. The cut actually turned out to be closer to 19 percent.

The academy is a 9 week academy for non-sworn correctional and you would have to reapply for a sworn position, if we start hiring anytime in the near future. The main focus right now is corrections because of the reorganization with CDC, all of the new corrections being hired are hired under grant money because of this.

You can apply for a CCW just like everyone else because of your work with in-custodies but dont expect any preferential treatment on that one. Pink slips were issued to numerous deputies sworn and correctional and we are still hurting budget wise. We are set to lose a lot of staff due to retirement within the next 6 months however we have no plans on any new academies in the near future, ive heard of a few lateral hires being hired but they are few and far between. More than likely patrol will be back to minimum staffing and be on 12 hour shifts like we were 4 years ago.

                        Good luck
