So I have basically wanted to become an officer since I was young. I stayed out of trouble, no drug history, no arrest history, not even a moving cite. I joined the explorer program when I was 17, and stayed in until I aged out (21). In the mean time I got hired on as a civilian for another department. I worked there for three and a half years. While doing that I paid my way through OCSD's part time academy, made it to MOD II so far (level II reserve status), the next section would be for my post basic. I recently resigned from the civilian position due to "personal issues".

Will I still be able to get a LE job somewhere? or am I out of the running for a couple years at least? I am 22 now. I feel like this will blacklist me and haunt me for the longest time. I need some sound advice from you guys out there hopefully there are some P&T or IA guys out there reading this. PM me if you want the exact details, I dont feel like posting them out like this. Maybe someone can run it by someone who knows at their respective agencies.

Were you under investigation or about to be when you resigned? Did you resign in lieu of being fired or charged with something?

yes, not for a criminal charge.

You'll be classified as a maturity issue if you come in to a department cold. Best I can tell you without knowing more.

thats what I figured. So right now my best bet is to get a job un related and put some time in between this?

A lot will depend on what the investigation involved. If it was for an honesty issue, you will have an uphill battle. Same for anything involving sexual harassment, bias or discrimination of any type. Things like tardiness or substandard perormance can be overcome with maturity.

Good luck! If it is your passion in life, don't give up. Identify your shortcomings, take responsibility for your mistakes, and plan a course of action to improve in those areas. Showing maturity in your improvement goes a long ways.

Hey FLA, a LOT is going to depend on what your agency's side of the story is - if a background investigator calls them, what will they say? As a prospective employer, without knowing all the details, the first thing I would be concerned with is that whatever it was that you did or got caught up in was negative enough to offset 3 1/2 years of dutiful work and accomplishments and "force" you to resign. Rhetorically, do you have an acceptable explanation for that and how could you convince someone that you are still "officer material"?

Before you enter level I, I would suggest you talk to tac staff and get their opinion. Remember, in addition to your previous employment, any hiring agency is going to contact OCSA and get their input as to your worthiness. Level I at OCSA is no joke and before you make that commitment, you want to know the hurdles you may be facing. If you want more info, shoot me a PM.
