    So close...

Hello fellow calguners. Im a in the process of becoming a student in the SFPD police academy. I passed my polygraph yesterday and the only step between me and the academy is the psychological exam. I am just wondering what it is they are looking for in this interview. I am in no way asking how to "cheat" this exam or anything like that. I am an trustworthy young man with a past that does not have any real incidents, and I was more that forthcoming on my application and during all interviews up to this point including my polygraph. This is my dream job and I just dont want to do anything stupid to jeopardize m position. I started this over two years ago and the city finally has money to start classes again. I am planing on just being myself as this has done me wonders up to this point.

Just trying to get a better understanding of what I should expect.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

You have the right idea, just be yourself, answer honestly, and don't sweat it.
Where most people get into trouble is when they give answers that they think is what the shrink wants to hear instead of giving their own answer.

Head doctors are payed to get into your head. and they WILL! Just be you, be yourself and relax. Dont just drop an answer that you think they wanna hear. Cause they will wrap you up and have you sweating. Answer honestly and truthful to the best you can. and RELAX.

If the shrink knocks something off his/her desk, pick it up... don't sit there with a blank look on your face while he/she has to stand up and retrieve it. And don't lose your cool... even if the shrink really seems to be pushing your buttons.

Psyches use witch doctor science and voodoo along with some made up hypotheses to try to explain why you are the way you are and how you are feeling. They do try to push your buttons on occasion but most of the time, they don't do that because it's not necessary.

I've had one push me and tell me that I am clinically depressed... and I was sitting there like... what the...? I tell her I am like everyone else, I have good days and bad days... but clinically depressed? Nope. Not there. She points to her charts and says she's right, look on the chart, I am clinically depressed... I was like... whatever. I think I know how I feel. Didn't get that job, but heard later that she was found to have some issues with cops in general and I wasn't the first one she tried to mess with.

Passed other subsequent psyches so I guess either I miraculously recovered on my own or she was full of ****. I am inclined to think the latter.

                Andrew,

Just be yourself. The shrink will tell if you are trying to be somebody else, i.e. Jack Webb.

                Good luck, Che

When I think of SFPD, one name comes to mind: Inspector Harry Callahan. Every cop's hero.

I just finished the psych exam. It went well. Written took about 4 hours. I was given a Wonderlic test too. I scored 27, above average apparently. This was big because I needed to stand out any way possible. I spoke with the psychologist after for about 25 minutes just going over any of my answers that needed clarification. I just have to wait now. My background investigator meets with the psychologist and someone in charge of hiring on monday to see if they will let me into the academy. FINGERS CROSSED.

OP, you may as well be asking what they're looking for on the eye exam. The psych test is nothing to worry about. It's just an attempt to see if you have some serious psychological problems. If you don't, there is nothing to worry about. You will most likely take the MMPI and talk to a shrink. It's long and boring and not very intense. Just read each question carefully and answer it. There's no right or wrong.

SFPD? Just use the word "diversity" every other sentence and they will love it!

San Fran? You want to be different? Be a conservative heterosexual white male who eats red meat and drives a full sized truck and owns a gun. They will have to hire you to fill the quota because that is the rarest minority there.
