I am a dispatcher for LASD. And without going into policy I wanted to ask if you go 10-33 do you say "10-33 give me the patch" or if you say " 10-33" do you expect to be on the patch? Just curious.

Per policy 10-33 does not automatically put you on the patch, though a good RTO should know to put one on the patch depending on the situation. I've heard 998's go out where they didn't put it on the patch and they very well should have.
Also, I've requested the patch without putting out 10-33 when I wanted to coordinate a suspect running but didn't want the whole world driving crazy...The RTO wouldn't give me the patch unless I said "10-33...Give me the patch"...so after going back and forth for a few seconds I was like "OK...10-33...Give me the patch".
I always told my trainees if they were going to say "10-33", it should be followed IMMEDIATELY by "gimme the patch" unless you were already on the patch, at which time you're saying 10-33 so everyone else will shut up and listen to you.
It made me furious when someone said "10-33" and I hear "10-33 Go" then a bunch of frigin' beeps for 30 seconds while he requests 902R to a T/C not involving the deputy... If you say 10-33, have the grown up bits to let everyone hear what you have to say...Otherwise reconsider going 10-33 at all.
If I was king, 10-33 would automatically result in the patch. -
I don't agree with always going on the patch with a 10-33. My first 998 units could not accomplish a 10-shut up and by remaining on the duplex, the dispatcher was able to keep putting out info while some units kept having motor mouth. My second 998 was similar. Other times taking fire i wanted the patch right away. I trust the Dispatcher to know when to use the patch or not.
When I go 10-33, I want the dispatcher to know exactly wtf is happening before everyone starts chiming in that they're rolling with long eta's. Going on the patch too soon can result in units covering each other and nobody gets the info.
With a running suspect or pursuit, I always requested the patch at the same time
On another note, one time while holding a 187 suspect at gunpoint the conversation when kind of like this:
Dispatcher: blah, blah, blah misc radio traffic
130-S (me) :10-33!
Dispatcher: 130-S standby, unit with the plate go ahead.
130-S: 10-33, give me the patch!
Dispatcher: 130-S, STANDBY!
Distatcher's Training Officer: 130-S GO WITH YOUR 10-33 TRAFFIC, YOU ARE ON THE PATCH!
I can look at it and smile now, but man was I pissed. The trainee called the station to apologize. It was her first night on the console and her T/O had a headset problem. She came out and did a ride along a few days later. She turned out o be a good dispatcher too.
If I was king, it would not be automatic. The patch is when you need to coordinate with other units. If you are in a fight, "10-33" and "requesting assistance at 'walk' and 'don't walk', deputy involved in a fight" says enough, and the dispatcher will roll the would and you can go back to using it out.
But, I don't have to deal with that anymore. 32+ years and 4 patrol stations was enough. Did one station twice, just for giggles. I'm a slow learner sometimes.

First of all thank you both for your services. I don't think Leo's get enough thank yous. Second thank you for you input. I agree with both of you oddly enough I just handled an assistance request where the patch was not activated. Because of that I didn't miss any info from units stepping on each other. Thank you again.
And on a side note I am now finished with all my background and testing for deputy. Hopefully I will hear back soon.Comment

Ron Solo you hit on one of my pet peeves. If an Officer is putting out emergency traffic, let him put it out, and THEN STAY OFF THE GD RADIO! If you are rolling his way, just go! Dont go over the air and say youre 49, or that youre extended, or "Whats he got"? Poor radio discipline seems so common these days, maybe I will start a company to conduct radio training. The useless, pointless, long winded crap guys put out on the air never ceases to amaze me.
Pay attention to the radio, and give the air to the officer who needs it. RANT OVER THANK YOUComment
