Santa Barbara County Sheriff's investigators have arrived at the scene of a shoot-out that left a narcotics suspect dead this morning and two Santa Maria police officers wounded.
The officers are being treated at Marian Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries, according to Santa Maria Police Chief Danny Macagni. One was shot in the leg and the other in the hand, Macagni said.
Because it is an officer-involved shooting - involving a total of four Santa Maria officers - Sheriff's personnel have been asked to investigate, Macagni said, adding that the department would conduct its own review of the shooting.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. in the 300 block of Agnes Avenue, where the suspect's body remains as the investigation continues.
The two officers, whose names were not released, are undergoing surgery, Macagni said,
The shooting occurred as Santa Maria officers, including members of the department's SWAT team, were preparing to make one or more arrests as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation, Macagni said
After a short vehicle pursuit, several suspects fled from an SUV, while the driver - the main target of the investigation - stayed with the vehicle and engaged officers in gunfire, Macagni said.
The suspect was fatally shot, and the two officers were wounded.
Agnes Avenue has been closed off between Thornburg Street and Broadway as the investigation continues.
The four officers involved have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated, Macagni said.
