Checking a serial number(civilian)

If I call my local PD will they run serial numbers for me to ensure the gun I want to buy is not stolen, and what if it is not registered at all(been in someone's family for a long time) ? Will they tell me that ?

I don't know of any police agency which will run serial numbers if you call via the telephone. However if you go to the station in person they may assist you.

To find out just call the station and ask for the watch commander. Ask him or her what their policies are for making computer inquiries of firearms serial numbers.

a helpful tip... make sure you just take the info for the gun....and don't carry the gun itself into the station....

The policies that I have heard of is that the department will only run the serial # if the OWNER is present in person. So how it goes down is that you (buyer) go in with the seller (owner), and the department will run the # for the owner, so he can give you the information that it's clear in the system. But I have not ever done one myself.

Aren't all the reported stolen serial #s in the system come DROS time?

Yes, but it would be nice to know if a gun is stolen before you drive hundreds of miles, pay the seller, pay the dros, then wait 9 days to realize the gun and the money are no longer yours.

Except that the seller has to have HIS photo ID, so some knucklehead who tries to sell a stolen gun also has to have a good fake ID, and I would expect any such knucklehead who's going to sell a known stolen gun is going to make more money by selling it on the black market anyway.

I agree, but I am sure there are alot of guns out there that people own and legally purchased that they do not know its history. Arizona resident buys a firearm from a private party (who got it from his estranged brother who reports it stolen 10 years later when he notices it missing), cash and carry 30 years ago. Moves to California, decides to sell it on calguns, it comes up stolen in the dros. It happens.
