Registered Handgun left at my home.

Is it legal for a family member who lived in my home to leave their handgun at my house while they leave the country for two or three years? It is registered, and I have my own handgun and HSC.

It is not a loan or transfer of ownership. The person is only storing it at your home. Have them put it in a small lock box that you don't have access to and you are good to go.

Not a LEO, but please make sure they oil the gun very well and place some moister absorbers in there too. Last thing anyone wants to come back to is a rusted up gun.

Yep, you can LEND someone your registered pistol for up to 30 days, after which it is considered an unregistered transfer in violation of state laws.

Like Erik said, prep the gun for long term storage.

No military exemption? My son has his guns in my home while he is deployed. Could they be seized and could he or I be charged with a violation of this 30 day max thing? I kept my firearms with my father when I deployed to Somalia. Did I put either of us in jeopardy?

If we are in violation, what can I do in the interim? Do I surrender his guns to the police and if so, will I still be charged with having an unregistered handgun(s) if I do so? Both he and I hold active security clearances and this bothers me. Guess I should have been familiar with the thousands of state and federal firearms laws here in California. I truly did not see this as an issue as he is my son. As many of you know, we can't take'em with us when we deploy and the US Navy does not allow for privately owned weapons storage on any Navy installation.

Transfers to parents and offspring are exempt, no?

you can transfer gun into your name to CYA by filling out the intra-familiar handgun transaction form, and sending to the DOJ with a $19 check. you dont have to go to an FFL because he is your immediate family. he doesnt need to sign it either if he is already deployed. here is the link to the form http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf
