San Diego Sheriff Correction Academy vs L.E. Academy?
Tags: None -
I think if you're going in a Sheriff deputy working the jail system it's a 15 week academy, then if you're going on patrol it's an extra 5-6 week of academy? Correct me if I'm wrong. -
I can speak for the Miramar regional academy, I have several friends who are going through it. The corrections academy is 3 months long and the full post basic is 6 months.
The full post basic LE academy is pretty demanding. The type of PT they make recruits go through depends on the Training Officer's for that class, but it's mainly cross-fit,and cardio intensive exercises. The academy is from 7:00 a.m to 3:30 PM.
The first week is rough, I saw them running the stairs countless times and doing push ups and 'burpees'. Several people disappeared after lunch time, and never came back on day one.The furthest you run is 7-8 miles at Miramar lake, so you'd better start running before the academy.
This is gradually built up though. I would recommend a personal trainer to be honest,or start a group of applicants/recruits and start training before the academy.Everything is chaotic in the beginning according to my friend. Not trying to discourage you. Its just the cold harsh reality.
Now in terms of the corrections I don't think it's as intense. But I don't know much about their academy.Last edited by Tacit Blue; 11-28-2011, 8:58 PM."All that is complex is not useful. All that is useful is simple."

Yeah, in either one you're going to train hard and be run into the ground. It's all mental and not more than anyone should be able to handle being you had to pass a minimum standard just to get in. The other big physical difference is that the detention/court academy also focuses more on defensive tactics.sigpic

But, according to SDSO, you actually don't take a physical fitness test to get in if applying for detentions/courts.
"STEP 6. Physical Agilities Test (PAT). Law Enforcement applicants only. Note: This is not a requirement for Deputy Sheriff Detentions/Courts position, proceed to STEP 8."Comment

Oh. If there's no PAT, then I would assume detentions would be less physical in terms of intense PT. Like Gadsen was saying above, the DTAC is prob going to be more intense. Since your more hands on with inmates and such. But, according to SDSO, you actually don't take a physical fitness test to get in if applying for detentions/courts.

Because for the PAT for LE, you have to go through a obstacle course. Which consists of a series of walls, 2,4,6 ft. And running up and down stairs and a body drag. Everyone does this before the academy, and if you thought that was hard. The academy is really going to make you wish that was PT instead...
You can go down to Miramar College and do a practice run and time yourself. The abilities course is near the police academy. I would go on the weekend, so you don't interrupt recruits and academy staff, because you'll have to run down the stairs which leads to their assembly area. That's if your also applying for the LE Deputy also.
So with the elimination of the PAT I guess expectations for physical fitness initially are less for detentions.Last edited by Tacit Blue; 11-28-2011, 10:12 PM."All that is complex is not useful. All that is useful is simple."

Start running. And go to the academy and run those stairs. There's a lot of em and you'll be running up them all the time. God forbid you don't touch every stair on the way up or you'll be writing about it like I did so often. Good luck. It's not that bad. Just keep your head in the game and remember you get to go home every day.Comment

I have a quick question. Im going to be testing to get into the academy soon and I was wondering if my asthma would be a problem? I just ran 4.5 miles in 35 min this morning and I used my inhaler while running but didn't stop and make a big deal about it. I would consider having my inhaler reasonable accomidation thats needed to do my duties so I didn't list it as having a disability.
thanks in advance

I don't see it being an issue. We had someone in my academy class that used one. If you're able to reasonably maintain your condition and it's not a severe issue I think you'll be okay. Did you already pass medical, or are you an open enrollee?I have a quick question. Im going to be testing to get into the academy soon and I was wondering if my asthma would be a problem? Like I said, I think you should be okay, but call a perspective department you plan on applying to and ask to speak with a background investigator. Then tell him your issue and ask if your condition will cause issue with clearing medical. Would hate for you to get that far only to be DQ'ed. Also, you need to be clear on if you have been diagnosed with asthma, or just given an emergency inhaler for asthma-like symptoms.sigpic
