Job interest

So, I work for large bank. If I lose my job I don't want to work for another company. I looked into COCO county sheriff, but the idea of working in a jail sucks.

I looked into State Ranger's and that seems promising, but I would probably be able to work at Mt Diablo or Mt Tam. Someone mentioned Federal Park Police, but the website was hard to navigate.

I have a degree in criminal justice (from CSUS) and am a former Marine. If I wanted an "outdoor" career, what should I do now to prepare for it? What opportunities are there, if any?

Start applying. LE jobs are hard to get right now. Most sheriffs departments start their people in the jails. It's not really that bad, and is a good place to learn how the bad guys think.

I would suggest start in some sort of minor or major volunteer work for the dept you aspire to work for. This way during the interview they have an insight on your work ethics, giving you a gain over other candidates who did have not volunteered. Everything nowadays is making yourself more marketable. Also CA. State parks after Gov. Brown decided to close down 70+ state parks this will make state park ranger LEO jobs hard to come by. Same for fish and game warden careers.

I am a retired policeman, 25 years. In 20/20 hindsight I should have done 20+ in the Marines. I was a Sergeant 0311/5811. Then go into law enforcement. Actually fireman would have been a better choice.

FYI, Park Rangers do everything city cops do, just without backup.

I worked one of our mountain cars for two years. Backup was always 45 minutes away, on a good day. Sometimes 1.5 hours, IF they knew how to get where you're at.

Choose wisely, grasshopper. If can be rewarding, but you need to understand the risks.

Well, it sucked in 1978 when I worked there, and we had Peter J. Pitchess as our Sheriff. PJP was the last great Sheriff IMO.

I worked it as a deputy in 1976 and it sucked and I supervised it as a sgt. in 2001, early 2002 before leaving IOD permanently. I had some good deputies and custody assistants working for me. It was one of the most intense floors outside of 1750 due to the type of inmate housed there and my guys and gals did their job admirably.

You will not get to select the park you want. If you are hired, you will be told where to report. My dad was a state park ranger and I was #1 on the state park ranger hiring list. I lived in northern California and wanted a northern park. I was told I would have to go down south. I declined the offer and stayed with the job I had.

So you think criminals do not go to parks? How about somebody doing something stupid in the park? A soccer mom is going to bust your balls when you tell her she can not feed 187 pigeons in the middle of the parking lot.

Remember when a new clerk/typist parked in his space on her first day on the job. Old PJP flattened her tires, impounded it and as legends go transfer her to Lancaster?
