    K9 Units

A few months ago, there were six or seven K9 units parked on my street (I live by LAX). All cars had dogs in the back seat with no LEO's insight. I live on a street with a lot of dog owners. So each time someone walked their dog pass one of the K9 cars, the police dogs would bark like crazy! Thus, our normally quite residential street was flooded with barking police dogs for more than four hours!

I called two of the departments I could see on the side of the cars (Culver City and LAX police). Culver told me that there was a "training" that day and that's why the cars were there. LAX basically told me to go F myself and leave them alone. Neither addressed the noise issue or the danger to the dogs in the hot cars. The LEO's finally showed up around 6pm and drove off.

Is that legal? I know if I left my dog in a my car on a hot day, even with the windows open and the engine running for 4+ hours, I would likely get a ticket. Heck even if I left my dog on the street, barking madly for 4 hours in a residential neighborhood, I'd be in some kind of trouble.

K9 units (the cars themselves) are far more advanced than they may appear on the outside... all the units I've seen over the past several years had rear fan/ac units designed to keep the dogs cool.

Funny how this question comes from someone named goofCAT with a picture of two cats as his picture. LOL

I think this is a cat conspiracy against dog cops. LOL

      Just kidding.

Really, the dogs are very well taken care of. As was stated, every police K-9 vehicle has a special built air conditioning unit specifically for the dog. if the ac goes out, or the temperature exceeds the safety limits for the dog, the officer has an alarm on his belt to warn him that his dog is in danger. The dogs are very safe and well taken care of. In regards to your noise issue, sorry about it, but sometimes the situation does not allow for an alternative. Im sure those planes from LAX are constant noise compared to the dogs barking occasionally at another passing dog for that 4 hour period.

      good luck

Training days are noisy... we always drew complaints when we trained in the city. Be thankful that your community has the K-9's there.

Most of our K9's bark at us if their handlers leave them in the car...well they bark at everything and anything while they're left in the car.

They're just butt hurt that they're left out of the fun.....

another thing to consider is that some of this training is isolated training for only 1 dog at a time. other dogs need to be kenneled. just like in any dog sporting/training day, only 1 dog has the field at a time while all the others are in their kennels.

            safety, distractions, focus, isolation, etc...

i'm always happy to see handlers actively training. complacency is just as bad for dogs as it is for humans.

Good to know that the dogs were safe in their specialized cars. As for the "training" part, there are no training facilities or fields on my block, just a bunch of condos. Not sure why they parked on our street and trained else where.

As for the goofcat it is actually a play on my name, not a preference for felines. I'm totally a dog person, involved in dog rescue groups. That's why I was worried about the police dogs.

Yup. Our K9 cars are specially outfitted for the dogs which include a very good cooling system and electronic monitoring of temps which the handler always know how cool or hot the interior of their cars are and backup systems to prevent over heating.
