LEO's thoughts on "new" crminals mentality?

I'm curious if you guys feel that criminals are more emboldened or enabled to do more violent crime or get violent faster, whether with civilians or LEO, because they *NOW* have an expectation to get tazed or tackled instead of shot on sight? Then KNOW they are going to jail instead of the morgue.

I realize the problems with officer involved shootings and the burden that leaves on the officer, but over the last 20+ years I think it's pretty clear that whether you call it dept policy, or being P.C., or listening to the "community"... it seems to me that bad guys seem less afraid of the police and are much more willing to go ultra violent at the drop of a hat, regardless of who is in the way.

I wonder how many of those guys are out recommitting crimes because they got tazed or gang tackled instead of shot just blown away and forgotten like the trash they are? Or is it a "perception" thing based on the internet and the rapid availability of news media covering the entire nation instead of just "tape at 11..." like it was before when something happened locally and nobody cared what happened more than 100 miles away? Now it's sensory overload because we're hearing about every single dirtbag instead of just the local ones?

    what do you guys think???

edited to strike out 2 phrases which seem to be focused on instead of the question. Sorry if the terminology seemed cavalier or a poor description.

Please read the entire question as "not every cop is 6'5" and a bodybuilding muscle factory... your run of the mill 140-160 pound cop finding themselves face to face with a combative thug of any size... do you think the thugs are more prone to violence whether it's police or random civilian because of non lethal tools that are widespread now?

I think that you have a very misinformed/twisted view of law enforcement.
Shot on sight? Since when? "blown away and forgotten like the trash they are"
    Are you serious?

yeah, I guess I dont know what I'm talking about. 1 parent city PD for 20+ years, one was in Bureau and I chose the Corps instead of either of them... so law enforcement is foreign to me.

It was an honest question. if thats how you want to answer it than fine with me.

First off thanks for ur service. Secondly ur parent's experiences r not urs as ur experiences will not belong to ur kids. Actual activity and voiced bravado r two different things.

It's a complex issue but I think a large part of the issue is on the punishment end and societies ability to be either fooled or forgive.

This is what it seems to me too. Quite a few reasons for that but I don't want to get up on a soapbox right now...

Their is no " shoot on sight" policy. The supreme court has ruled that illegal in the case of fleeing suspects, or disabling a pep. And police don't shoot as a means of control. It's to ' stop a threat' or prevent 'bodily harm to a person'.

              Just my two cents..

              Not a LEO,

In my experience, the last thing on a criminal's mind is how they are going to get "handled" by an LEO.

Well I'd say that if you shoot on sight....well I hope you like prison or you better be able to cover your butt very well. Either way your not an Leo anymore most likely. No matter what level of force you use, you better be able to explain and support why you did what you did. I don't think its necessarily anything to do with suspects being afraid or not afraid of the police. I think it has everything to do with the fact that for the most part there is no real punishment for a lot of criminals. What I mean by that is for the most part a lot of criminals never see real prison time, or at least it doesn't seem like it. It seems like everybody involved in the prosecution has an agenda and that is simply convictions to further their careers. Much like politicians these days....whatever it takes. That's just my opinion and I don't reside in California, so it probably doesn't apply, but there it is.

I don't think it's our tools that emboldened the criminals. They know there is always a chance to get shot.

I think it's more society's attitude, the disrespect for cops, revolving doors at the court and jail, rap musicand the whole glorification of the gangster life that drives the brazen conduct we are seeing.

If anyone has read or been to a Grossman seminar they may have a different view on how things today are different than say, 10 years ago...15, 20, 40...

Grossman makes a VERY strong argument that media related violence has a lot to do with it... I have read his books but after going to the seminar, I believe it. Kids minds are not developed enough to handle media violence. I can't say it as eloquent as him, so read the books and see him in person.

LEO's are caught smack dab in the middle between excessive coddling of criminals in the CJ system and the public who rightfully expect societal order.
