LA Co. Sheriffs dept is going to hire close to 2000 Deputies. So have him apply now. Good luck.

Please don't take offense to this, but he should NOT apply to the Border Patrol if his goal is to become a Police Officer. He will have to go through the Border Patrol Academy regardless of the fact that he has completed a police academy already. Also, the work is VERY different from that of a Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff.

Why would i take offense? He was asking for an agency hiring and BP is hiring a large number right now, with his military service contributing to his retirement with BP its a win-win situation, plus it opens to the door to DEA or U.S. marshals or any number of federal agencies.

Lol there were some other types in a different thread that seemed to get offended. Just didn't want you to think I was bashing you at all.

I just put it out there because he was looking more like he wanted to work for a local agency not the Border Patrol. I just get irked because during the last big hiring push, the Border Patrol hired a ton of s*%t bags who just wanted their foot in the door even thought they wanted to be cops and are now stuck doing a job they hate because they don't want to go through another academy and or give up the money.

That and they hired a bunch that just used it to bide their time until they could get on with Air Marshalls, ICE etc. It costs A LOT of time and money to fully train and equip one Agent. Almost a full year from the time they start the academy until the time they are on their own in the field. For someone to just waste time and money and essentially quit for another gig that they wanted all along isn't right. It is one less Agent on the line and is a spot that could have been taken by someone who actually wants the job as a career.

Border Patrol, no way! Those guys get sent to prison to easy!
A U.S. Border Patrol agent has been sentenced to two years in prison for improperly lifting the arms of a suspected 15-year-old drug smuggler while handcuffed — in what the Justice Department called a deprivation of the teenager’s constitutional right to be free from the use of unreasonable force.

With the Fullerton Jc academy, he's really limited to what agency will hire him. Some agencies do not recognize that academy. I know for a fact that OCSD, LASD, LAPD, LBPD will not hire anyone who has graduated from that academy unless they are a lateral from an agency with their actual basic post cert.

                      Hero,

I totally understand how you feel. I have the same complaint about a lot of people on my department. A lot of people apply with LASD because they know we need the numbers. They have no desire to be an LA County Sheriff's Deputy. They just want to get their "foot in the door."

It's much easier to get picked up by an agency who is hiring 2,000 than an agency who is hiring 20. They use my dept to pay the cost of backgrounds investigations ($55,000) and the academy ($55,000). That's $110,000 spent on someone who has no desire to be a Deputy Sheriff.

                      Op,

Have your friend do his research on the departments that are hiring. See what they have to offer, and if their benefits/retirement package is to his liking. He needs to make a decision on where he would be the happiest. 30 years is a long time until retirement.
