    K9 unit question

are there any K9 guys here? and just curious do they let you choose your dog or do they assign you one?

I'm not a K9 officer but I know my department pairs you up with a dog and puts you through training. They still haven't figured out a way to train the dogs to not poop on the floor at a burglary scene or to not bite cops.

Both my dogs were picked by our trainer, but if they didn't work out they were replaced.

Best way to not get bitten is don't move.

Both times I went to the canine academy the instructors paired the students with dogs. I am on canine number 4 with 2 being aquired from other handlers who either got promoted or left the service.
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

The two k9 leos i know both were paired when the dogs were pups and lived with them 24/7. One officer was on his 2nd dog, the retired dog still lived with the family at home.

I was paired with mine. Our trainer has a gift when it comes to selecting dogs and matching them with a handler. Had mine five years now. I've thought about breeding mine and training a pup for my next PSD. Still have to run it by the brass but, given the cost of dogs these days, I think they would be very receptive to it.

ROFL..... That is funny. Here in Elk Grove CA, my good friend is a K9 and his puppy craps in every house search he does. Aint nothing like telling the home owner the house is clear of burglars, but there is a huge pile of crap on the living room floor!

Our K9 came straight from the trainer after the first K9 didn't work out. Both our K9 and one of his pups lived with us 24/7 until our K9 retired after approximately 7 years on the street. Poor guy really missed heading out with Dad on hot chases, so I'd take the doggies for long rides past the PD to visit everyone.

I think most of Orange County departments in Southern California contracts with Adlerhorst as one of three suppliers, and Dave typically does the choosing, I believe.

Some departments import their own dogs and that's rare, so the K9 sergeant may aid in the process.

Very few departments allow their K9 officers to supply / train their own dog, which is interesting.

I've donated a few to departments.
