    Fema courses

I found some free online courses for FEMA education, do you guys think its worth the training? It seems pretty comprehensive so far, although kinda vague with some learning domains. Would this help my resume?

Apparently non LE, and U.S residents can obtain certificates. And best part its free! Right now i'm taking the active shooter one.

It depens on what field you are trying to work within. If you are tyring to get into fire you must be NIMS compliant. You can take the NIMS test on the FEMA site, its a pretty basic test, you should also look in to ICS Incident Command Systems as well

The FEMA NIMS courses are a complete waste of time and a joke! We had to take several of those stupid online tests to get some really absurd certificates.

Anyway, that was last year. I nor anyone at my unit can tell you what those courses were about and how those "Federal Government" FEMA courses did anything to help us, protect the people we serve.

Typical Federal government waste of time, money, resources all for nothing.

To LEO's, ask yourself this question: When was the last time a FEMA sanctioned online course helped you to become a better officer or to have a "safer" workplace environment when dealing with the public?

A combat firearms course, emergency first aid course, legal update course, emergency vehicle operation update course, officer survival course.... those are worth attending.

+1 on that. They are basically courses designed for agencies to cover their asses. You just click next until you get to the end of the lesson then take a short quiz and you are miraculously certified in incident management, crisis management etc. My former employer use to force all employees to take them. All it does is take you out of the field and leaves one less officer on the street until it is completed. It's just a way for agencies to point the finger when the proverbial defecation hits the fan and say "well he/she was FEMA trained they should have known better."

To be honest, I learned nothing from it. I felt it was a giant waste of time. However I feel that way about all online based "training." It's just a glorified way for somebody to cover their *** and say that you were trained on something.

The online FEMA courses are mandatory for us to take and it seems we have to do them every 2 years. They are a complete and utter waste of time and money. The entire series is so stupendously vague and horribly presented I am not exactly sure what the point is.

The entire training material was obviously written by somebody who has been driving a desk for far too long. Anything of value in the training was already long ago put into use by my employer.

Not sure which part of your resume you're wanting to pad or why, but if you want to take some extra curricular classes that will do some good check out what the Red Cross near you can offer. I know of more than a few active, retired, and aspiring LEO's that volunteer with them.

FEMA NIMs is a joke.. but it made my training section on my annual review look better than it really was.
