11166 form (mandatory child abuse reporting form)

The title of the thread probably did not interest most people. Today I had a Child Abuse/ Domestic Violence update class. The sergeant in charge of investigations presented the material for the class. He has been a cop for sixteen years, worked for two agency's, been a detective for six years and the investigation's supervisor for two years. The remainder of time was spent on patrol. During his presentation;he turned down the lights and played this video.




When he turned the lights back on; he had tears in his eyes. He continued on with the presentation but fumbled his words for a few minutes. He frequently cleared his throat and coughed. At the end of class, I waited. I said that I saw the video had an affected on him and I inquired as to the incident it reminded him of. He did not say.

We've all been complacent at one time or another and dealing with CPS can be a chore. Let's not forget why most of us became cops. Finding dope, getting in fights and taking people to jail can be enjoyable but the next time you get that last minute 273a call, think of the impact you will have on that child's life.

Handled way too many like that over the years. Before we went to non-sworn desk personnel, I handled phone calls like that too. Even thought you know units are rolling code, it stil takes a long time for them to get there. Two minutes can be an eternity.

I hate hearing those calls. Any training or calls involving kids being hurt has always been hard, especially being a father. I haven't heard that 911 call before and felt compelled to search it out. Turns out it happened here in San Diego.

We've had one of those here working security. 12yr old boy watched his mom get beaten within inches of her life. Mom had security patrol on speed dial for parking issues. One of my Officers was first on scene and it took 5 "rides" from his Taser to get the man under control for more of us to get there as well as the SD.

Thanks for stepping up and making the offer, hopefully he has Peer Support on his department and he can make a call.

We've all been to calls that affect us, that touch something in our past, and most of us just push it aside and bury it. Know that Peer Support is there to listen without judgement. I've even had calls from folks who asked me to give a fellow officer a call just to touch bases because they'd been involved in a nasty incident...I never had any of those officers get mad because I called, most thanked me for even caring

I don't know how you guys keep control of yourselves when you respond to things like this. I hope I could but I have serious doubts.

my dad used to work graveyard shift as the ID officer back in the day. Ended up with ulcers from the stress. they moved him to dayshift thinking it might ease the stress and help with the ulcers. But now as the dayshift ID officer, he had to take photos of all the child abuse cases, made the ulcers worse and he ended up medically retiring.

You don't make it personal. It can be hard at times but you just have to keep remembering it isn't your child it's not your family.

I "got" to work child molestations and sex assault in the investigative capacity. It was one of the most rewarding jobs and one of the most stress inducing at the same time. I loved the end result of the work I got to do, but I hated it while I was there. I wouldnt go back to that unit unless I absolutely had to. I would rather work the overnight shift with bad days off for the rest of my career if it was between the 2. At the same time, if I am on a case, better bet I'll do everything I can to put a guilty man away.

Then there are all the BS complaints I have gotten across my desk. The reasons as to why they lie vary as greatly as the number of complaints there are.
