LEO checking guns at the range

A few weeks back I was at a public range and during a cease fire, two Forestry officers went up the line and checked every gun for bullet buttons etc., they pulled one guy off the line, not sure what the outcome was for him.

Is this legal? Do we have the right to ask them not to handle our weapons? My stuff is legal, it is just uncomfortable to have someone looking and touching my guns.

This is pretty common if the range is on land leased from the Forest Service. It's usually part of the lease that the operation abide by all state and federal laws, and that the Forest Service will conduct periodical checks for compliance.

Yep, it is Forestry Service that is checking too. It is the Firing Line in Lytle Creek. I am pretty sure this is leased land.

      Thanks for the reply.

Oaklander is collecting information on these types of incidents with USFS/BLM employees. Please take a moment to fill out the incident report that Oaklander has created.

Yes, you're on U.S. Forestry land up at Lytle Creek. If you want to shoot on their land, you have to follow and abide by their rules. Plain and simple.

Now, I suppose that if you refuese to show them your gun, they'd without a doubt kick you off the range. If you have a legal firearm, you have nothing to worry about, except of a slight inconvenience of your time.

That being said, it makes me angry that they are checking guys out on the range, when they should be out checking for marijuana grows and the illegals with their AK's plowing the fields out on OUR forest public land.

Actually, it's our land that they're tasked with managing. Let's not forget that little part.

As for the hippie comment, well, I suggest the commenter meets a few of them before talking out of his ***. The darned hippies hired by USFS I've met so far were pretty cool. Got quite a few tips on where to find deer from them, and guess what? I found deer there. Not a small thing in Los Angeles.

Most likely asked the range officer requested to have the cease fire to do an inspection.

Some range officers do it themselves from time to time.

                  Eh, no.

It's not reasonable just because it's a firearm and/or because he is a cop.

Plain view is not a search, thus no warrant is needed.

Can someone fill me on on the PC used by forestry service for the inspection? I am not aware of sine age stating you agree to waive your right against search on forestry land. Am I missing something?

This is the LEO forum. So you might be a bit more courteous.

Just a hint. If something is in plain sight it's not a search.
Because that guy was one. I'm not going to get into all the reasons why. It didn't have anything to do with him being LEO so I don't know why it matters what forum I'm in.

The OP said "Do we have the right to ask them not to handle our weapons? My stuff is legal, it is just uncomfortable to have someone looking and touching my guns." That sounded to me like he was doing more then looking at something in plain sight. If my car is in plain sight can it be searched?

Besides Drider, who is ticked off? Did their posts get deleted? All I see is a couple people wondering if forest service are allowed to check firearms without PC, a couple people that don't think they are and a couple LEO that seem upset that someone would even question a search by a fellow LEO.
