Heres is one of the biggest dealers of surplus Police Vehicles/motorcycles in the LA area. They got Kawi's,BMW's, and Harley's.

Most agencies now days use BMW's and some still use the Harley's.

Check with Modesto Harley Davidson, they usually have a few police turn ins, I picked up a 2009 Road King, Manteca PD turn in, a few months ago. 10k miles, ABS brakes, heated grips, $11,100, They had a 2006 and two other 2009s there as well, all with pretty low miles. Any ex-Manteca PD bike will be good, they take extra good care of them, I know, I set the unit up back in 1988.

Eagle's Nest HD in Lathrop has them from time to time. They can turn up on craigslist as well. Go to the motorcycle section and search for "police" I see them there frequently. I am looking for the BMWs though.

Laidlaw's Harley down here in Baldwin Park has a few police trade-ins they get from time to time. I was seriously debating getting one of their trade-in Ultra Glides, but the all white paint scheme is pretty sharp. You just have to be cognizant that it's going to be 1 seat only and the rear is taken up by a lockbox trunk. You won't get any of the emergency equipment either, it's all stripped out unless you specify that you want one with the lighting and sirens still on it. Beware that it is illegal for you to have though if you are not operating it as an emergency vehicle.

Burbank Kawi sells some of their used stuff with all the equipment on it too.

There's a huge difference in what is listed on Craigslist as most of those used bikes are converted to funeral escort duty with flashing ambers.

When I picked up my Road King, Modesto Harley had removed the siren, red/blues and the "police" insert on the side of the saddle bags. They filled the empty emergency light housings up with clear lights that were still activated by the code-3 switch, they just didn't flash of course. For $13 bucks you can get a decent, stainless steel or alum. insert for the empty spot on the bags and for around $50 you can get some pretty nice push button, flush mounted, releases to replace the big black "hockey puch" locks that come with it. I popped off the solo seat, removed the radio rack and installed a half seat since I wont' have any passengers. Manteca's bikes are all black now so it looks more like a civilian version.

                    +1 For Modesto!

Saw this a couple of weeks ago:

The Thunderheader is VERY loud - but only on WFO. Idles fairly quietly - at least in comparison to those crazy shorty pipes that folks seem to like these days!!!

The thunder header is far from quiet at anthing other than idle, almost as bad as strait pipes. Last few rides I have been on I let those that have the thunder header(remember it is named so for a reason) either ride way ahead or get behind!

Also, if it matters, I am no old cranky man, I have ran strait pipes in the past, I just realize their is no reason for being grossly loud!

Oh and to the OP: you can find good deals on poilice trade-ins, The bikes are a quite a bet better than the cars!lol
I have a Reno pd electraglide, I have owned for 4 years and have put over 60k miles on without any problems!

While I'm a Harley rider, I have seen Long Beach BMW with a few CHP trade ins now and then. A friend bought one of the 1100s and loves it. He said the CHP model has more height options than the civilian version.

They are closed permanently "due to the downturn in the economy". I wouldn't spend my money there since their service department turned my bike back over to me a couple of years ago with the turn signals inoperative, tried to say that they were that way when I brought the bike in (BS) and wanted me to come back another day to have it made right. Good riddance.

Back on point for the OP, make sure you check a police bike carefully before you buy. Some departments treat them well, some don't.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!
