I am not LEO but have owned 2 GSD's for family pets and home protection. Nothing but good to say for them. Thet have great instincts.
I leave my GSD's home during the day. They are outside only when alone. Give them lots of big toys to play with. As pups, they wanted to chew everything. This included shrubs and window sills.

...Only thing was, I didn't eat it... Thor did. He literally got on top of the counter, opened the cabinet, neatly pushed the veggies to the side, got the chili, opened the cans, ate every drop and disposed of the evidence in the trash.

It wasn't until we found the tooth marked mangled cans that we realized what had happened... That and Thor's apocalyptic crop dust that lasted for 3 days!

That is simply too awesome! What a great example of Thor's intelligence!

I always ask how many "cop bites" departments that use Malinois have. Malinois are high drive dogs that are more rugged than GSDs. However, I would never pick one as a family pet. I prefer GSDs. I never had to have an alarm or worry about my house when I was a K9 handler. The poster who recommended an Anatolian Shepherd knows what he is talking about. We have a few at homes where I work and you're not getting on the property without killing the dog. Very loyal, very big, very alert and mean.

That's a pretty funny anecdote. Dogs are a lot smarter than we give them credit for.

Damn... I have so many stories it's crazy. Different dog, same name... My dad who trained both GSD's, used to tease Thor II, pull his tail, etc. One day, Thor had enough. He got up, walked to the kitchen, walked back and began biting my dads pajamas...

He continued, biting and tearing them off until the where shredded piece by piece. It was funny as hell watching my dad try to crawl away. Thor pranced around and had a smirk on his face the rest of the day, and my dad didn't have a scratch on him.

Let me start off by saying that I am not leo but I am a california post evaluator and police service dog trainer with one of the largest vendors in so cal. I have bred over 30 litters of gsd and owned over 200 and more than 25 malinois and 20 rotties. I do not reccomend a working line mal for homes especially with kids, they have too much drive specifically prey drive and will chase and bite anything running, read kids and their soccer ball. Gsd is more laid back, my male is 4 fully trained psd and my 9 month old daughter grabs his tongue and he will not close his mouth around her hand. Hangs at home alone not destructive and fiercly loyal and protective. As with any breed I will tell you it depends on the specific animal and the genetic stock behind him. My experience as well. Got the first GSD when my daughter was 3 months old, never a problem. My current GSD is over 8 years and allows a 2 year-old boy to hug her or pull on her or whatever.
As pups, my GSD's liked to chew, as I said before. Once they matured, no issues.

I can't say they'd harm anyone (unless you count licking to death), but my Bassets can find a pea sized food particle in a giant pile of horse ****.

My oldest even does "T-Rex" on command. That's scary, right?
