depends on how many years it's been since you got it and what department.

Short answer: depends on the circumstances...

      - When did the violation occur?
      - How old were you?
      - What have you done since then to show life improvement?
      - What agency are you applying to?

And so on... right now, there are so few agencies hiring and so many applicants competing for spots that you're probably gonna have a hard time getting picked up over what are likely hundreds of other applicants without a DUI on their record.

Some departments may never hire you... others may look at the totality of the circumstances and forgive the violation if enough time has passed. Browsing the US Border Patrol forum, I've seen agents posting who said they got hired within a few years of getting a DUI... other applicants said they were asked to withdraw because of a speeding ticket they got a year before applying.

My agency takes DUI very seriously. No mercy for the deputies caught doing DUI even. You may have to ask a recruiter.

It varies from agency to agency, and from candidate to candidate. I am personally aware of a couple of instances where guys with DUI in their background have gotten hired. I know of others where it was reduced to the euphemistically named "wet reckless" and they got hired. Others have not.

If the candidate is at or close to best in the pool, and the agency wants them, that candidate may well get some consideration. But in some agencies, it is the kiss of death.

It totally does depend on the agency and what you have done since then to show a life improvements. I always say do not let it stop you from applying because you never know. Just remember to always keep copies of your background packet. that thing is a B**ch to fill out more than once.

We have a guy with a DUI, but he got that like 15 years before he was hired. Like the others stated, it really depends on the agency.

It'll be tough, especially now. There are hundreds of people competing for a few jobs.
