    policy on long guns

Can cops carry (in the car) off duty loaded long guns? To have rifle or a shotgun in the car with ammunition in the magazine.

Legally, yes. Most agencies have policies/ general orders that keep deputies/ officers from carrying non- approved rifles. For the most part the policies limit the liability of the agency if the rifle were used. I have had a Marlin 30-30 in my vehicle for an impromptu pig hunt. (Pig tag is in my wallet)

Why would a person? Why the particular question?

Sorry just curious as it's one of the odder questions I have seen.

For on duty, no personal rifles allowed. Even the dept rifles, you have to be trained before you carry it on duty. During the 1992 riot, a lot of LEO's carried their personal rifles out of policy. My Lt. carried an M-1 Garand. I told him it was out of policy, but he didn't care.

When off duty, I guess it doesn't matter

Generally speaking, and IMO, a peace officer who is authorized the use and carry of firearms could lawfully keep a loaded long gun in their car on or off duty if they wanted to. As noted above department policy is going to have some bearing on that.

From personal experience I've known more than a few rural deputies who kept a personally owned rifle with them both on and off duty as the opportunity to legally fill a hunting tag can present itself at the oddest moments.

My Dept (in AZ) authorizes long guns if you have been through carbine course. There is a list of not authorized rifles, but things like NFA items area allowed if you legally own them.

What I hear is that it is LEGAL to carry a loaded long gun in the car off duty, unless a policy says that You can't.

What if there is NO policy on the subject?

Then I still say they are good to go.

We can agree to disagree though

Then of course you could. If there isn't a law or policy against something than how could you not be able to do it?

                      I do it everyday.

                        The question has two answers.

Yes, a LEO may legally carry a loaded legally configured long gun off duty in his personal vehicle.

The second answer is whether based upon his departments policy.

If he is NOT authorized based on his particular department rules and regulations he has not violated any laws, however he has violated department policy. Which depending upon the situation could lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
