    Military CCW

Tell me why I can go to war, representing the U.S. and CA, be given 30rd magazines and M2 .50 cal machine guns, 240B's, 249's, Mk 19's, etc and have to know everything about the weapons, max/min range, types of ammo, and rates of fires, but it's so damn hard to get a CCW Permit here in CA? I mean really do I not have the knowledge or experience to get one? I feel as if local law needs to lead by example, all LEO's should know everything about all weapons to tell me I can or can't carry one. I don't mean to knock law enforcement but to motivate them to lead from the front. I'm sure most of you look at your peers and think the same. For example, I can't tell a soldier to run faster if I can't run faster with him.

I hope no LEO has to endure the experiences I've had in combat. But my experiences qualifying for a CCW are more than the judge or 'funded civilians' or any other person who are still getting CCWs approved by a sheriff or chief. I mean to live in CA with the protestors here and there, it's just not fair, I'd rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6. However, with LEO hours being cutback and some getting laid off, the statement still stands," when seconds count, help is only minutes away."

hmmmm .... where do i start with this one. If your gripe is about the CCW and the Sherriff not issuing one, there are many avenues to take. One I can think of is start something to get a new sheriff elected.

As far as Police Chiefs go, you have to elect an entire new City Council (depending on the city charter) to have them appoint/hire "favorable" chiefs.

If your talking about the laws in general, it has to go back to the elections and the jack *** anti gunners that get elected. Also funding organizations like CGN, CRPA, and the NRA and 2A foundation, and etc, isn't a bad idea. Just have to see where the money goes along with the attitude of the organization itself.

All I can say is your opinions are yours to express. You've earned that right and damn well guarantee I can do the same. Thanks.

Because it's CA. You'll get used to it.

The LEOs in this forum have nothing to do with whether or not you get a CCW. Take it up with your Chief of Police or County Sheriff.

"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

Thanks for the professional response. Sorry for my rant. When I was in Iraq the few times I was there, I just always thought it would feel good to carry back home. I was able to in Colorado but not here in CA where I'm actually from. I hate the feeling of being untrusted when I have made the sacrifice and my family has made the sacrifice to deploy for this country and not have the same rights when I come home. I personally felt safer over there than I do here lol.

Gosh I hear you, but being a OIF vet myself I can honestly say it might be tougher for military vets in some areas, I have had several occasions where I'm always assumed up to no good, #1 Hispanic, #2 Military, gosh I say a few rotten apples can spoil it for the rest of us. I'm sure you heard of those guys at Ft Carson coming back from deployments going AWOL, killing their friends, doing drugs. Gosh it's tough being a young vet, this war has been tough on everyone, and again to my point some few rotten apples can spoil it for the rest of us, did you ever see that video tape of some gang banger ex marine who went on a shooting spree wit cops outside a liquor store. Yeah dou$#ebags like him makes peeps a lil nervous about us buying guns left and right(legally) then trying to get a ccw.
Officer: "Soldier, do you have change for a dollar?"
              Soldier: "Sure, buddy."
Officer: "That's no way to address an officer!
              Now let's try it again!"

Officer: "Soldier. Do you have change for a dollar?"

              Soldier: "No, SIR!"

I know my gripe isnt with you, but seeing that this is a LOE fourum. . maybe the OP was looking for some LEO advice from front line dude about how to address his CCW situation. (or mine for that matter)

I can't help but think that's like asking a grunt why he doesn't do more to end the Iraq War. I do understand the frustration, though.

It is what it is, I felt the same way when I was doing my thing yet was unable to legally buy alcohol in California, if I can fight and die for my country shouldn't I be able to buy a drink? Or not being able to simply bring a weapon on base without going through the Provost Marshall. Matter fact firearms in general are frowned upon in the military when not in a combat zone, they can trust you when your being shot at but not when your at home. The hypocrisy is great in our system, prime example is that up until recently DOD police (not just MP) whom are full sworn law enforcement officer were not even allowed to carry off duty.

But as stated above it would be like telling a grunt why he can't end the war in Afghanistan. It is however good for you to learn that many LEO's are vets so we have been where you've been and know how it feels.

You not only have the issuing authority and state law problem. You also have to deal with military regs. My son has been stationed in Alaska for the last 6 years. You don't need a ccw to conceal carry there but the Army, until about 3 weeks ago, forbade concealed carry.

I have a ccw for Colorado got it issued for 78 bucks and a copy of my military iD just cuz I was military and this was in 2009 when I got it. Also it is against Army regs to carry in uniform. But when it comes to civilian wear you are to abide by civilian laws. Therefore no carry on government property. So to the guy in Alaska if you lived in barracks or in military housing then I can see why you couldn't carry but if you live off post then it's free game for CCW as long as you are in compliance. My commander told me about it lol.

What do you mean "up until recently". Last time I checked, we are still not allowed to carry off-duty. That little law that the president signed only gave DoD an excuse to again publish that we are not allowed to carry off-duty.

A similar assertion is made on the WikiPedia Enty for DoD Police for "Civil service series 0083", but there is no citation listed.

Civil service series 0083A DoD police officer is assigned the federal occupational series code "0083", the code reserved for police and federal protective officers in the civil service. This occupational series code applies regardless of what specific agency of the Department of Defense the officer works for. Individual installations conduct the hiring process based upon local need, thus a person applying for a DoD police officer positions applies to specific installations. Some installations have detectives, which can share the same "0083" occupational series code as police officers or "1811" series as criminal investigators. These detectives investigate minor crimes that are not pursued by the special agent of each branches' investigative agency (such as NCIS, CID, or OSI).

On October 12, 2010 President Barack Obama signed into law S. 1132 the "Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Improvements Act", which states that police officers and law enforcement officers of the executive branch of Federal Government are "qualified law enforcement officers" and thus are authorized to carry a concealed firearm off-duty, anywhere in the United States, regardless of state or local prohibition. All Department of Defense Police Officers are sworn civilian law enforcement officers of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.
