Shane,
I was working for a neighboring agency when Irvine PD first started, I've been away from the area since 1979 so my experience is really dated.
They really tried to do everything right as a start-up and within a few years they were one of the premier agencies in the county. They really understood the value of hiring good people, and then training them well. Most people that I've stayed in touch with still have good things to say.If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life. -
A fellow from up this way who I had experience with over the years was their second chief. He served ten years there and oversaw a good deal of modernization and drove the professionalism of the staff very, very hard.
Everyone I've met from there says it's a great place to work, and hard as hell to get into.

I have heard that they are top shelf in regards to people, training, and equipment. Irvine is also one of the safest cities in America, thanks in large part to those IPD guys and gals. Good luck!Comment

I go to school in irvine and can say that working for them you will be doing alot of 961's but it seems to be a good department and the few people I know that have worked for them have enjoyed it. They also have their 40mm launchers sitting in the space between the drivers and passengers seat. Cant complain about that hahaComment

A little OT; Ok, I will admit I've been off the job for awhile (8yrs the 31st), but what is a 961. I have never seen that code before.I go to school in irvine and can say that working for them you will be doing alot of 961's but it seems to be a good department and the few people I know that have worked for them have enjoyed it. In the O.C. it's "car stop, no backup needed". 960 would be "car stop, backup needed", 960X would be "car stop, expedite backup". if memory serves me wellJohn Bishop

I met one Officer from irvine and he was highly educated academically. I think their department required atleast an A.A degree.Comment

I know personally two great guys that were both hired and ground out during the FTO process. Both went on to great careers in other PDs. If you like living under the shadow of management every second of your life Irvine's a great place to work.
I'd recommend a well run deptartment that supports their officers. Garden Grove from my experience is a good working enviroment. Plenty of crime too.To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.

Yeah, sorry. I didnt mean to be the douche who uses radio codes on an online forum. Irvine seems to be full of non eventful traffic stops, but as I have not personally worked for the department I cannot fully attest to that.Comment

They have good progressive ideas and seem to be on it as far as proactive policing. I have met some guys from there in the academy and one guy was touting their "PRO" program for the intermediate step between patrol and SWAT on expedited responses, in light of the Columbine shootings.
However, I have also heard horror stories from friends that live or frequent the city and how they get pulled over because they have cars with mods on them. Granted, they are illegal mods and PC to stop, but there are many cities where the cops don't bother that much with those things.
Maybe Irvine is safe enough that they are proactive about going after smaller crimes in pursuit of fixing all the broken windows?I like guns

It's basically a large upscale bedroom community with a several hi-tech corporations based there. I worked with a lot of guys who transferred over from IPD. They all said the pay and benefits were always among the highest in the O.C. But staffing was so high, and crime so low that they spent a lot of time working traffic and being bored.John Bishop
