I am going back to CA in a couple months and I'm Probably going to take a couple of my Buddie's kids fishing. Their dad doesn't fish and they're good kids who love the outdoors so when I can I take them to a spot I used to fish all the time. I don't think I would need to get a non-res license, cause I mostly carry the gear and untie birds nest, but I do occasionally cast for the youngest one. I never reel in, its all about the kids catching some fish. should I be buying a license? Thanks.

You got a better chance of seeing a sasquatch.
The only Warden I've ever seen in this state was at the gas station near my home.
There used to be a fishing event in Downey, CA at a local park with two small lakes. Parents would be helping their kids while DFG personnel walked around giving tips and enforcing rules...so I would assume its OK...but I personally wouldn't risk it. -
I agree with your Sasquatch statement, I'm not worried about getting caught. Local people don't know about my spot, let alone game wardens who have to patrol half the state, I just want to be legal.
I guess what the short question would be is when is someone "fishing"Comment

Both of the above nuggets are gold.
I'm not a warden but I've known and trained with them in the past. As an adult, if you have a line in the water whether you reel in or not, a warden is likely going to consider you to be fishing and you'll need a license or the one day.
Give the regional DFG office nearest you a call and ask them. List of offices here.

a game warden was walking around lake guasti one time and none of us kids had licenses. We were maybe 10yrs old or so. My brother caught a bluegill with a piece of fishing line and a spoon (no rod). The warden asked him what he caught and gave him a thumbs up and didnt ask for a license. This is when you had to show your licenses "tagged" to yourself.Comment

ill give you advice for fishing in salt ( thats all I know)
Get a one day permit. Ive been fishing many times with my dad and have been asked for my license. I was in an OC agency and we stopped a guy who was fishing and asked him for his license.
bottom line, be safe and get the 14$ license.Comment
