I guess it depends on the department. When I was in the academy, I got to shoot the full auto MP5's and M4's they issue to swat....just cuz we were bored.

They will give you issue during the hiring process. They hit me hard during the psychology evaluation. The lady was very anti-gun. She kept asking why I own so many handguns and why do I need more than one.

If he is still in the background stage, why are the instructors talking to him?

Or is it a case of where the instructors are just giving him flak to give him flak? That happens in the first month or 2 regardless or anything.

When in the academy, plan on the instructors giving you flak for anything.....wasting air, using too much sunshine, shuffling with intent to bebop, carrying a concealed rape tool..... in other words, for just about anything they can think of to test you.

              Ahh, the mind games....

If he legally owns them should not be a problem. But from the hiring standpoint, there may some other indicators showing him a bit odd in charachter, so the two put together may be cause for concern. Don't want a guy who is a wanna be unstable gun freak as a cop.

There was a guy booted from my academy because he brought a loaded gun into the locker room for show and tell.

He is probably talks about guns too much. Tell him just to shut up and only answer questions. Don't give your opinion or talk about anything. The last thing officers want is sum chump talking about guns, calibers when guns are one of the smallest aspects of the job. Alot of cops are not gun nuts. Guns are just a tool in many of their minds. We had a gun nut in my class. He was the only one to have an A.D. in our academy. After the incident he was talking to an instructor about how many guns he has. The instructor replied" yeah, buthow many holes do you in your roof?". Tell your friend to fly under the radar.

Tell him to stop doing that and he'll be fine. Instructors are supposed to ridicule and induce stress over the most ridiculous things. Tell him to blend in. Save his prowess with firearms for the firearms training portion of the academy, and be humble about it.

Not to go O/T but that reminds me of a time in boot camp when I got reamed for "didi-bopping" while marching in formation....I still don't know what my DI meant by that. I do remember all the 8-count body builders and rifle-jacks I got to do because of it though

Oh man... I love that... I'm going to borrow that when I haze... I mean... break in... I mean... train new boots.

I've only had 1 department give me grief over owning so many guns. I told them that I collect. The guns are all different calibers. That's all I said. They didn't say much else. They also didn't hire me. But no other department ever asked and nobody ever cared.

As for the academy, STFU and keep your head down. Get past it and be done and never do it again.
                        I like guns

I got crap in the academy for knowing about/ owning several firearms. some departments have you list every firearm and describe it!

You should've asked her how many pairs of shoes she owned?
