One of the IE agencies (Colton I believe) will be laying off 6 officers in April. It was supposed to be 12, but due to the concessions of the Police Assoc., they were able to reduce it to 6.

The article in the paper (Press Enterprise) said 5 of the 6 were already in backround investigations with other agencies.

I talked to a guy in Colton over the last few weeks, and he said it was slated for 15 layoffs. He was looking around already. Not sure if he will be affected if they knocked it down to 6. I'll give him a call later to see what changed.

Go to policeone.com and check out the careers section it will have job postings all over the country. Unfortunately academy grad really doesnt mean too much anymore, most departments are looking for full on laterals. Your CA POST academy cert may allow you to test out or have a truncated academy in another state. Might be worth the try just to catch on somewhere. Good luck.

You would think so. At the end of 2009/beginning of 2010 I was one of five finalist for a position. It was going really well, aced the oral board, got my background stuff in, then the psyc came.

All five of us went in the same day. I was the youngest off all the potential hires, one was a former army ranger (I went to the academy with him, great guy), one was a lateral from a small neighboring city, and two were coming down from Sacramento. I think it went well, then all of a sudden I stop getting calls from my BI. I call him once a week for the next three weeks hoping to get some kind of update. I finally get word from him that the shirk thought I lacked life experience, a.k.a too young.

Come to find out that out of the five finalists, I was the only one not hired. Other than that I've applied to pretty much all Monterey county departments.

I got jacked out of 2 testing cycles with 2 different departments for that exact reason. The first time I was 20.3 years old and the next time 21.5. Both times I scored in the 96th percentile too.

Just keep trying. I got hired eventually. Had to wait another year, but it happened.

This was after the crew on the City Council did not like the answer they got from SBSO regarding the price tag for them to contract.

Colton, much like Rialto has done a couple times, used SBSO as a pawn the the chess game to get the employees to accept a "deal" to keep their jobs and to allegedly keep the PD entact. SBSO spent tens of thousand of dollars in man hours to conduct studies to determine the contract and equipment necessary for the services to provide LE for Colton. All of this was done a great expense and the City of Colton will not repay those costs to SBSO. In these tough economic times, this was a needless expense SBSO incurred and ultimately was just a pawn the the chess game. Downtown is not happy because they told the City of Colton we had gotten burnt by Rialto (twice) and we were not going to play those game. So much for doing the right thing.

Hiring runs in cycles. I can remember testing in the mid 70's and having 3,000 candidates for 2 positions. As more and more agencies dump the 3% at 50 retirement you will see everyone that possibly can retire before they loose it. That will take care of the problem for new hires.

That is disgusting....4+ years of experience and you have to go look for a new job. Friggin' re-cockulous.

My department took a hit too awhile back and we lost alot of good deputies.

                        It's a shame.

It might be new to LE in Socal, but it's certainly not unique.

My position is highly skilled. In June of '09, after 17 years in the field, 3 with that company, and 10 with my previous company, I found myself looking for work for 7 months.

We are seeing some places go back up 6 years in some instances... Scary.

I feel humbled at the fact we could cut our dept 99+% and I would still have a job.
