    Leaving California upon retirement

How many LEO's here are planning to move out of California after retirement? I retired and am waiting for my wife to retire. I am looking at Reno, Nevada, Boise/Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, and Prescott, Arizona.

I have friends in New Mexico, AZ, Idaho (gotta be a LEO sub-station state), Texas, Oregon, Montana, Nevada and some other states I know I'm missing. None have regretted the move out. All have cited lower crime rate, lower state taxes (income, property, sales tax), lower cost of living, friendlier gun laws (no kidding), less congestion, lower insurance costs, and decent medical care for folks at retirement age. They have suggested one needs to look into decent senior type medical care close by when you move out. My friends in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho think half of retired LAPD and LASO is up there!

    You gonna stay?

I would like to leave but I may not.

It depends on if uprooting the kids will be too much. It also depends on where our relatives are living then. Right now they are close but in 10 years when I am a short timer who knows.

My choices would be in rough order:
    1. Reno/Tahoe
    2. Portland (tie)
    2. Maui (tie)
    4. Anywhere this side of the rockies.

Keeping a place here in Ca, but the rest of the time you will find me south of the border.

Waiting for my wife to retire, our daughter's wedding next year and to be rid of our house in CA. Then it's off to the Carson Valley. Started looking at Reno, but the Valley is a lot nicer and not that far away.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

ha it's funny but I am no where in your guys position but when I retire I will be out of Ca for all the reasons you all mentioned. It'll be Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona, $100-150K homes and beautiful views!

Actually, I have been driving around Salt Lake City looking at some houses today. There are some nice houses here.

I am also thinking about Idaho Falls or Rexburg area of Idaho, also. I have about 4 years to go. Still got some time to think about it.

Only if my wife would agree with me, though.

Obviously things can change, but the current plan for my wife and I are to move out of state upon our retirement. I like Washington for the rainy weather and Montana for everything else.

I retire in 4 to 6 years, then I am leaving California. I'm thinking Idaho or Arizona, but not sure yet.

Payson Arizona weather is much like where I live now in California. I gettin da phuk out of this left wing mess of a state!

I have a couple years till (r) but planning ahead I bought a place in Dayton, Nevada over a year ago. I found it is exactly as all the reasons you stated. For neighbor's I have the Sgt. Major of the Marine Mountain Warfare Center as well as a prison guard across the street. My next door neighbor works for Nevada Wildlife as well as another prison guard a couple of doors down. Not to mention I guess everybody in Nevada has a take home car... there are marked LEO cars all over the neighborhood.

We need a list of the best places to retire! Places with mild winters, low taxes, less restricted firearms laws, and a decent size town with good hospital.

My friend near Coeur d' Alene, Idaho had a heart attack and he was eventually sent to Washington. He's OK now, but it does kinda remind one to look for good medical care close to you.

He also left his kids and grand kids in San Diego. He misses them, but says the move was worth it.

I want to leave California after retirement. The wife says Im crazy and she is not going. I figure that I still have 15 years to convince her. All I am looking for is similar weather. I hate the extreme cold and heat. somewhere middle of the road like Los Angeles, but without all the politics, crime, congestion, laws, hight cost of living, etc. I can only dream.......I would like to buy some land or a small home now, since the properties are so cheap. I need to start looking.

My wife and I both retired medically almost 8yrs. ago (she wasn't leo), but the bolded part is what has kept us here. We have three kids, our son just got married a few weeks ago and that came with a 3yr. old stepson, plus they have one on the way. We now have 8 grandkids and will have 9 come Oct.

Also, my older brother lives within an hour drive. The younger one has lived in Colorado Springs for over 10yrs., but I can't take that kind of weather. I like my snow on the mountains about 50-60 miles away and it should only rain when I'm asleep.

It would be too hard to leave even tho there is much to dislike about this state. My family is too important to my wife and I and even tho our son is now talking about moving out of state to Colorado because of the expenses here, I don't still don't think we could do it. I hope he doesn't.
