Howdy! I am looking for a way to give back a little of myself to my town, state and country. I have a pretty good career, I make enough to pay the mortgage and get all my other bills paid. But it doesn't really move me, or make me feel like I have really accomplished anything. I have thought about a career change, but I don't think that I could make enough to support my household in a law enforcement career, or even get a paid position in such a field. So I am contemplating this volunteer gig with the sheriffs department. If there are any deputies here, I would like to know what all this reserve duty entails. The website is pretty vague, but it sounds like standard patrols with a full-time deputy. Or apparently, there are differing levels of service based on POST classes... I am seeking a little guidance on the experience of reserve duty, as well as an opinion on whether it is a worthwhile use of my time? Or even if the department is taking reserves at this time. Anyways, thanks for reading!

SD Sheriff reserves?

The department is definitely taking reserves. Most reserve duties entail going on patrol with a deputy or another (Level I) reserve. If you're into the outdoors and hiking, SAR is always looking for volunteers and reserves. If you're a true gun guy, send me a PM, there is also a place you might fit in. But it's definitely a worthwhile use of your time."We got too many gangsters doin' dirty deeds, too much corruption and crime in the streets. It's time the long arm of the law put a few more in the ground...." -
