I think we had this kind of topic in this forum before. Honestly, I think it all depends on the agencies, but most will not accept them from what I have heard in the past. I mean Everest, and Phoenix universities are getting sue right now. In fact, CEO of Everest just walked out from his job. They call those school, "Profit only university." As for me, I would rather attend community college because its cheaper and you can transfer to 4 year private or public state university down the road.

I know a Army vet who wanted to work for LAPD in the past, but he did not get hire because his college degree from Westwood was not considered real or traditional college degree.

A lot of people in management in my agency have the on line or correspondence course college degrees. I just don't know how good they are.

A school should be regionally and nationally recognized. Most important, is for a regional accreditation. If a school lacks either/or both, then I would pass....

Check here and look up the institution. If its not on here then chances are its not accredited.

I wouldn't trust any of those schools on TV with so much small lettering at the bottom.

Thats a great resource above. look up each school and you will see their accreditation.

The schools you mention have different types of accreditation and a particular department may accept it or may not. It all depends. For Example, my department accepts degrees that are regional or national accreditation. the Everest career schools accreditation is not acceptable but the Phoenix University North Central regional accreditation is acceptable.

The school you go to also requires that you plan ahead. I never thought I would go to college much less ever get a masters degree. As I got older and realized that I wanted to promote up the ranks I decided to go back to school and eventually ended up with a Masters. Some of the schools that are not regionally accredited may not give you the opportunity to go to some schools. For example, most of the local california schools prefer schools that are accredited by the western association of schools and colleges (WASC). If your school is not accredited by WASC, then the local schools may not even accept any of your credits. This acquaintance completed a 4 year degree from one of the schools like everest and then tried to sign up for the masters at UCLA. when he took in his transcripts, they told him that he needed to complete a BA before he is accepted into the Masters program. He told them, he did complete a BA, but they said, that BA does not count and you have to start all over. His 4 years of hard work were not beneficial to him. He may be able to use it somewhere, but not everywhere. That is why I always tell my new recruits to go to a school that is accredited by WASC. This way they can avoid problems in the future.

On a side not, if you dont have military experience then you have to go to school to move up the ranks quickly. The LEO field is very competitive and if you dont have a degree of some kind, you will get left behind. I highly encourage all of my recruits to go to college as soon as possible. Their are programs that help LEO's to go to school The Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department has the LASD University. This was put together to help Deputies go to school. They have opened up the school to all law enforcment and you complete the College courses on LASD grounds. They have agreements with several colleges and universities that may accept work experience for credit and or may have a great discount. I completed my masters through LASD and National University with a great discount of the tuition in one fast paced year. If you want more info, PM me and here is the link to the LASD University.

They dont offer engineering degrees, so in my book they're pretty much crap. A school has to offer hard sciences or its pretty much crap.

Has to be Nationally accredited in my agency. They don't want degrees from diploma factories.

I got my Bachelors Degree while working as an LEO. Went to the Union Institute University. It cost around $20k and is all accredited. I have been getting my full 25% incentive pay for the past 10 years.

Union Institute was kinda fun and stupid all at the same time. I did one of my final papers on 'Female Breasts' and got an 'A' in the class. I went into it with about 180 units and job experience, so I was able to get my degree in less than a year. It was easy! My annual income is around $105k without overtime!
